Chapter Three - The Conversation

When I woke up, I instantly got nervous and felt the nerves hit the pit of my stomach. I got dressed, remembered I had no food in the fridge, and left for work. I swore I would go grocery shopping after work, and decided to pay rent one week late so I wouldn't struggle to buy groceries this week. I carefully calculated my bills versus my paycheck. As soon as I got in office, I grabbed coffee and knocked on Sam's door. I was shaking, and could barely hang on to my coffee. He looked up from whatever he was writing, and smiled at me. He waved for me to come in and I opened his door. “Do you have a minute?” I asked, almost whispering. His face dropped. “Yes, I do. Please shut the door and sit. What's up?” He asked. “I wanted to talk to you about Saturday.” I said. He nodded, he had expected it. “Sure. Did you still want to go?” He asked. “Yes. I'm just not sure what you're asking. Is it a date? How does dating work with you being in an open marriage? Is it one time, sometimes, all the time? Is this just as friends? Is - “ I asked, he cut me off. “Kassie, I'm your boss. Asking you out would be inappropriate and a huge HR issue.” He said, I was disappointed, until I saw his smirk. “Well, I wouldn't tell anyone... obviously.” I said, relaxing a little. He was interested in me, Jasmine was right. “I'm happy to hear that. Yes, I'd love for it to be a date. Basically, my wife and I each see other people. Sometimes she sees the same man for several weeks or months, sometimes only once. It entirely depends. Our relationships are completely separate, by the way. No threesomes or love triangles. I would like for us to see each other casually, scheduled around her dates and my dad time of course.” He said, he leaned back in his chair, seeming satisfied with his answer. I was, too. “How serious is it... would I meet your kid?” I asked, nervously. “No, no. We'd like her to have just her two solid parents and not really get mixed up in anything too crazy. You wouldn't meet her.” He said. I felt relieved. I wasn't ready to be a step parent or anything close. “And... s*x?” I asked. I could see it peaked his interest. He blushed and looked down at the floor, smiling big now and obviously a little shy. “Yes, if you wanted. I'd like to be safe about it, of course.” He said. “I'm on birth control. No worries there. Condoms for STDs seems smart, no offense. If your wife is sleeping with other people and...” He held his hand up. “I regularly use condoms, even with my wife.” I was happy with that answer. I was on birth control, a tradition I had kept up with since I was 16. I nodded, letting him know I was OK with that. “Sounds good. See you tomorrow.” “See you tomorrow.” He said, giving a glorious smile. The rest of the work day went quickly. Sam and I were both giggly and flirting with each other all day long. I wasn't very productive because I was filling Daniel and Jasmine in over text. We agreed to meet after work to go grocery shopping, which was a typical Friday night activity for us. As we walked through the grocery store isles, we talked about the date with Sam. I was nervous, and they were skeptical about the whole thing. We all agreed it would be a bad idea if anyone else at work found out. Sam was right, it was inappropriate, one or both of us could easily get fired. Our company had a strict 'no fraternization' rule when it came to supervisors and subordinates in the same department. As I was putting a couple cans of beans in my cart, Daniel rolled his eyes at his phone. “What? What's wrong?” I asked, Jasmine turned around from a few feet away to listen in. “Another f*******: post about the pregnancy. She's six months in now? Oh, they're having a boy, how wonderful.” He said, his voice heavy with sarcasm and jealousy. Daniel had always wanted kids. “You need to just block her, Dan. Seriously. Why do you put yourself through that?” Jasmine asked. She was always straight and to the point. She was right. “Well, I told her we'd stay friends.” He said, giving a shrug. “You don't owe her anything.” Jasmine reminded him. We all agreed. He said he'd consider blocking her, and we changed the subject. We finished our shopping. Jasmine agreed to come over in the morning to help me get ready for the date, we said goodnight. * “I'm here, I brought coffee.” I poked my head out of the kitchen to see Jasmine walking in, bag and coffees in hand. It was noon, the date was in five hours. “Thank you, you're a life saver.” I said, taking the coffee from her and watching her dig through the bag to sort food out.  We set to work. We set incense up in the bathroom and closed the door to let the smell build up. We painted our nails, I was still in pajamas. I put a hair and face mask on. We had glasses of wine and talked about our families for about half an hour. We went into the bathroom and started digging through my cabinet and smelling my body wash and lotion combinations. We picked the one that smelled best, she left the bathroom and I showered. I threw on a robe once I got out of the shower, leaving my hair up in the towel. It was now 1:30 and time was getting a little rushed. I did my make up while Jasmine blow dried my hair. I straightened it while she went and found some of my dresses that were not suited for work. I tried a bunch of dresses on, but we settled on a strapless, short navy blue dress. I wore silver dangly earrings and silver heels with it. It was revealing, but still tasteful. Jasmine and I did a quick happy dance, agreed I looked very ready, squealed about how exciting this was, she made me swear I would tell her everything. We said goodbye as I got in my Uber. I was thankful for a female driver, who said, “Nice dress, have a good night as I got out.” I walked into the bar, feeling extremely nervous and self conscious. I had no idea what to expect. I looked around the bar until I saw Sam at a back table. “Wow.” He said, his eyes moving up and down my body. “You look amazing.” I ordered a Vodka Cranberry and sat down.
