Chapter Fourteen - Confrontation

873 Words
It was finally Friday afternoon. I was buried in work, and likely wouldn't get to leave on time. This was a result of an appointment I had earlier in the week which made me late. I was catching up finally, but likely wouldn't leave for a few more hours. A knock on my door frame caught my attention. Daniel stood with a big smile. He peeked back – Sam's door was open. He beamed. “How are my girls doing today?” He said loudly, jolly. I flashed a smile back. “Doing alright. I'm going to be late tonight.” “I'm gonna go over to that bar down the street, grab some dinner and then I'll come back to grab you. Don't work too hard.” We exchange smiles and he ran a hand down my hair before leaving. As soon as he was out the door, a familiar face came stomping into Sam's office. Shannon, his wife. “Why are you ignoring my calls?” She growled. There was no one left in the office. I wasn't even sure Sam realized I was still here. I kept my head into my work while I listened to the conversation. I felt a little bad for eavesdropping, but after everything he'd done to me, I didn't feel bad for long. “I'm not having this conversation with you, Shannon. Where's Ellie?” “With my mother. You are having this conversation with me. You are my husband. We are a well-off, married couple. We have the means to take care of this baby and you will not pressure me to get an abortion.” She snapped at him. “You said it's been months since you got a period, that your cycle is out of wack. If that's true, you don't know how far along you are. We haven't had s*x in three months so if you're any less than that, it isn't my baby and we had an agreement.” He yelled at her, rising from his desk and slamming his pen down. Shannon didn't back down. My heart sank. She was pregnant. He wasn't standing by her, either. I wasn't sure if I felt better or worse. I felt for her, and the feeling was all too familiar. To feel alone, to feel unsupported. On the other hand, I was relieved it wasn't me. It wasn't that I wasn't good enough for Sam – his own wife wasn't, either. The women he left me and his child for, even she wasn't good enough. “f**k our agreement, Sam. This is MY choice. I won't be forced into a decision I don't want. You told me what happened to Kassie. She got pregnant and she resented you when you made her get an abortion, how'd that work out for you? I have an ultrasound tomorrow and I swear to God you better be there.” She turned, and then she saw me sitting there. I couldn't pretend I didn't hear them. Her face twisted into an expression I couldn't make out. I scooted my chair back to stand up. I wanted to explain, I wanted to talk about things. I knew I had made a mistake when her eyes went to my belly. At 27 weeks pregnant, there was no mistake now. “You bastard.” She whispered. “You've been talking me into an abortion for two days on the grounds that you made Kassie get one. She didn't get one.” She walked toward me. “This is his baby, isn't it?” I swallowed hard. “His daughter, yes. But he-he hasn't been involved, at all.” I said. Shannon walked out. “Ultrasound Sam. Tomorrow.” Sam walked into my office. “I should have fired you. This is all your fault. You shouldn't have kept the f*****g baby, Kassie. You ruined my life. You ruined everything. If I have anything to do with it, it will be your last day here. I'm your boss, they'll take my word for it. Take your things.” Sam shouted. “No.” We both turned to see Daniel walking toward us. “No. You'll continue working with her. You had s*x with her, you're her boss. A DNA test could prove it. She could sue you for unlawful termination and s****l harassment. Do you want the firm to have that reputation?” Daniel said. “Just go.” Sam said. I grabbed my purse and went to Daniel. Daniel put his arm around my waist and led me out. On the way to the car, I recapped everything. I went to get in the car when I noticed Shannon crying in her car. I gave Daniel a look, and he nodded. I walked to the car and knocked on the window. Shannon slowly rolled it down. “He tried to make me get an abortion. I couldn't. I kept the baby. He hasn't been involved. He paid me fifteen thousand to leave him alone and I have. My boyfriend is going to raise the baby with me.” “I'm sorry, Kassie.” She said. I gave her a look and went back to the car to meet Daniel.
