Chapter Three: The Change

408 Words
The night pressed down on Beacontown like a heavy blanket. Scott lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the silver glow of the moon spilling through his window. His body felt alive in a way that terrified him — every sound sharper, every scent stronger, every heartbeat echoing in his ears as if the world itself had turned up its volume. He sat up suddenly, clutching his chest. His skin prickled, his muscles tightened, and a low growl escaped his throat, startling him. He stumbled to the bathroom, flicking on the light. The mirror reflected a face he barely recognized. His eyes glowed gold, his teeth lengthened into sharp fangs. His hands trembled as claws pushed through his fingertips. “No… no, this isn’t real,” he whispered, gripping the sink until the porcelain cracked beneath his fingers. But it was real. His body convulsed, fur sprouting across his arms, his jaw stretching into a muzzle. His breath came in ragged gasps, half in fear, half in exhilaration, as the transformation consumed him. Scott staggered back, knocking over the towel rack. His reflection stared back — not a boy, but a creature. A wolf. Panic surged. He bolted from the bathroom, claws scraping the doorframe. The house seemed too small, too fragile to contain him. He rushed outside, the cool night air hitting his fur like a shock. The world was different now. He could smell the grass, hear the rustle of distant animals, feel the pulse of life all around him. The moon above seemed to call his name, pulling him into its silver glow. Scott dropped to his knees in the yard, torn between terror and wonder. His heart raced, his senses burned. He was no longer ordinary. No longer invisible. He was something else entirely. He ran — not out of fear, but because his body demanded it. His legs carried him faster than he had ever moved, bounding across lawns and empty streets. The wind roared in his ears, the night alive with scents and sounds he had never noticed before. For a moment, exhilaration drowned out the fear. He was powerful. Untouchable. Free. But when he stopped, panting beneath the glow of the moon, the truth hit him like a weight. He wasn’t just a boy anymore. He wasn’t just Scott Howard. He was something ancient, something dangerous. And though he didn’t yet understand it, this was only the beginning of his rise.
