Chapter 3: The Mistletoe Tradition The Christmas party was in full swing, with students laughing and chatting, and the music pulsating through the room. Emily was trying to shake off the disappointment of seeing Jake with another girl, but it was hard to ignore the pang of jealousy that had settled in her chest. As she made her way through the crowds, Emily's friends caught up with her, chatting excitedly about the party. They were all having a great time, dancing and laughing together, and Emily tried to join in, but she couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. Just as she was starting to feel like she was going to be stuck in a funk all night, Emily's friend Samantha grabbed her arm and pulled her over to the mistletoe that was hanging from the ceiling. "Hey, Em, it's tradition!" Samantha exclaimed, gesturing to the mistletoe. "You have to kiss someone under the mistletoe on Christmas Eve, or you'll be single for the rest of the year!" Emily rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "That's just a silly superstition, Sam." But Samantha was insistent. "No way, it's a tradition! And I have the perfect person in mind for you to kiss." Emily's heart skipped a beat as she realized who Samantha was looking at. Jake. He was standing across the room, laughing and chatting with his date, but his eyes met Emily's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Samantha nudged Emily forward. "Go on, Em! It's just a kiss!" Emily felt a surge of hesitation, but Samantha's enthusiasm was infectious. She took a deep breath, and stepped forward, her heart pounding in her chest. As she approached Jake, his date looked up at her, a look of surprise and annoyance on her face. But Jake just smiled, and held out his hand, pulling Emily under the mistletoe. The music seemed to fade into the background as Emily looked up at Jake, her heart racing with anticipation. She felt like she was melting into his eyes, like the whole world had come to a standstill. And then, in a movement that seemed almost slow-motion, Jake leaned forward, his lips brushing against Emily's in a soft, gentle kiss. The world around them seemed to explode into color and sound, and Emily felt like she was floating on air. It was like nothing she had ever experienced before. As they pulled back, gasping for air, Emily's eyes met Jake's, and she felt like she saw something there, something that gave her hope. But as they stepped back, Jake's date glared at Emily, her eyes flashing with anger. "What was that?" she demanded, her voice low and menacing. Jake held up his hands, a placating smile on his face. "Hey, it was just a mistletoe kiss, okay? Don't read too much into it." But Emily knew that she had felt something real, something that went beyond just a casual kiss under the mistletoe. And as she looked at Jake, she knew that she wanted to explore that feeling further. As the night wore on, Emily found herself stealing glances at Jake, lost in thought, replaying the kiss with Jake over and over in her mind, wondering what he was thinking, and whether he felt the same way. She couldn't believe how natural it had felt, how right. She had never felt that way with anyone before, and it was both exhilarating and terrifying. She knew that it was crazy, that she barely knew him, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something special between them. As the music slowed and the lights dimmed, Emily felt a sense of melancholy wash over her. She knew that the night was coming to an end, and she would have to face the reality of her situation. Jake was taken, and she was just a friend. As she danced with her friends, Emily couldn't help but sneak glances at Jake, who was laughing and chatting with his date. She wondered what he was thinking, if he was feeling the same way she was. But as she turned to leave, Emily felt a hand on her arm, spinning her back around. It was Jake, his eyes locked on hers, a smile playing on his lips. "Hey," he said, his voice low and husky. "I wanted to talk to you before you left." Emily's heart skipped a beat as she nodded, her mouth dry. "Okay," she managed to squeak out. Jake glanced around, making sure they were alone, before pulling Emily into a quiet corner of the room. "I wanted to apologize earlier," he said, his eyes sincere. I know I'm with someone else, and I shouldn't have kissed you. But I couldn't help myself. " There's something about you, Emily, that draws me in." Emily's heart was racing as she looked up at Jake, her mind reeling with possibilities. "What are you saying?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Jake took a step closer, his eyes burning with intensity. "I'm saying that I want to get to know you better, Emily. I want to see where this thing between us goes." Emily's heart soared as she looked up at Jake, her mind racing with excitement. She knew that it was crazy, that they barely knew each other, but she couldn't deny the connection they shared. As the night drew to a close, Emily and Jake exchanged numbers, making plans to meet up over the holidays. Emily couldn't wait to see what the future held for them, and as she drifted off to sleep that night, she couldn't help but smile. The mistletoe tradition had brought them together, but it was clear that their connection went far beyond just a simple kiss. And as the clock struck midnight, signaling the start of Christmas Day, Emily felt a sense of hope and possibility that she hadn't felt in a long time. As Emily drifted off to sleep, she knew that this Christmas would be one to remember, and that the new year would bring new possibilities, and maybe even a new love. Maybe, just maybe, this Christmas will be one to remember.
