I couldn't sleep that night. The wine that was poisoned on the table still sat on my mind. It was playing over and over again like something I couldn't erase. I had built my estate to be impenetrable and yet, twice. Twice now, someone had managed to get close to harming her. I was up till dawn. I watched as wolves began their training as they did every morning. It should have been reassuring. It wasn’t. Because none of it mattered if I couldn’t protect what was inside my own walls.
