Chapter 10 : Let's Go On A Date
James's strained voice kept floating in and out of my ears but my incapablitiy to give him any response was setting off all the wrong nerves in my head.
Fuck this s**t. I thought, as I gave up on getting my body to move and concentrated on opening my eyelids but the bright light was making it hard for me to achieve my mission.
He must have noticed the fluttering of my eyelids as his melodious irritated voice spewed curses like a waterfall: smooth when it's still flowing down, hurting hard when it hits the ground, "Dim the f*****g lights."
After he finished speaking, someone eventually turned down the lights, allowingmy eyelids to slowly open up as I glanced at my surroundings.
My view was dominated by white walls, enormous machines, and white-clad people. This seems like a hospital. If I have to be more descriptive of the vision that my eyes could see, it seemed like an ICU.
Wait... ICU!? What in the name of Lucifer am I doing in an Intensive Care Unit!? Didn't I faint at home out of stress? What is happening? How did I end up here!?
However, I was unable to express my thoughts. More accurately, I simply couldn't because my throat was parched. I needed water.
"Water," I croaked out. After whispering just one syllable, which was in no way was of the audible range, my dry throat began to sting terribly. But, I was thankful that James's was a very attentive person and a sharp listener as he caught onto what I had said. As he barked, literally barked, at the nurse present in the room. "GET A f*****g GLASS OF WATER. WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STANDING LIKE A STATUE!? DID I HIRE YOU TO POSE AS A STATUE!?"
Oh God! This guy. Where did all of my husband's calmness go in two days? Something or other kept causing him to lose his cool. First it was his mother, and now it appeared that I was the source of his temper. More specifically, the state I was in.
I held James's hand and squeezed it a bit to calm him down which seemed to have worked as I felt him unwinding upon the contact of our skins. James's turned to look at me with a smile on his lips and melancholy in his deep bluish green eyes.
I'm not sure why, but when his sad and guilt-ridden face reflected in my pupils, my heart in my chest tightened. It appeared to me that he was burying himself in the guilt that my presence here was his fault. And, I'm not sure how, but my hand, which at first refused to move from its place, reached out for my lovely husband to free him from the heavy shackles of guilt.
Perhaps he got the message from my actions, as acid rain fell down his eyes, burning the lands of my heart. But before he could say anything, the door opened and in walked the nurse, carrying a glass of water.
He didn't appear to realise he was crying because he didn't wipe his tears in front of the nurse that had walked in carrying a clean glass of water. Instead he rushed towards me, assisting me in sitting up in a comfortable position so that I could drink water comfortably. The nurse approached him, handed him the glass, and exited the room. We heard the door close behind us. And, as soon as we heard it, James brought the glass to my lips.
I sipped the water, never taking my gaze away from my handsome husband's tear-streaked face. The sight caused my heart to twist and churn in the most uncomfortable positions in my chest. After, my thirst was quenched, I pushed the glass away from my lips as he placed it on the table.
"I'm sorry." Since when did my voice start to sound like a man's? Did they fix an Adam's apple in my throat?
My hand instinctively went to my throat as the thought passed through my mind. But when did I develop the ability to speak withmy lips pressed together in a thin line?
"I'm sorry, Inez." Oh! I wasn't apologizing. It was my dear husband. That's why I wondered how can my sweet, melodious voice turn husky and rough all of a sudden.
"James...," I finally said as I opened my mouth. My eyes landed on him as I observed him fidgeting with his fingers like a child waiting to be chastised by his mother for doing something he was repeatedly told not to do.
"It's entirely my fault. I should've answered the door the first time you knocked... I just needed some time to relax... I..." His voice sounded broken, perhaps reflecting the state of his soul.
"James." Despite the fact that his voice was salting the wounds on my soul, the sensation of that burning soothing pain was something I didn't want to or rather couldn't let go of. So addicting. What was it that was even leaving a heavenly aftertaste in my mouth after the pain?
"Inez?" James called my name, yanking me out of my thoughts as I stared into his eyes, trying to find the reason why I was happy to see that he cared but at the same time sad to see him in this state.
Was I falling in love with him?
"How long was I out for?" I questioned him as his gaze shifted away from mine.
"Three days." He replied, looking everywhere but at me, with an expression that reflected his struggle to conceal his pain from me.
"I see." I couldn't think of anything else to say. Did I have feelings for him? I reached out for my lovely husband again after a moment of chilling cold silence that made me shudder to my core.
"James."
"Yes?"
"When I get out of here, let's go on a date." Yes. Let's go out for a date. I need to figure out how I feel. I need to come to a decision on the issues that are taking up residence in my mind, rent-free.
"WHAT!?" James jumped to his feet upon hearing my words, as he looked at me, bewildered.
"Mr. Agustine, we're going on a date. Let's also draw up a marriage contract because we need to clear a few things up."
Yes. We needed to clear some things up. Clarify a number of issues. Because I don't want to leave with bad or no memories of him if I love him or have feelings for him. After all, there isn't much time left.
