September 9th 2020. A rather casually dressed Daniel got into his car. He wore a pair of bootleg jeans and Raybans. After an hour of traffic, he arrived at the university. Daniel walked onto the main courtyard and scanned the area diligently for just a single face. A familiar woman had caught his eye that had seemed to be waiting for somebody. Could it be Sandra? He was not sure (was he ever? He was unsure about leaving and even about returning to meet her). The woman angled her cheekbone toward the left as if she was looking for somebody. From standing far behind the bench of the woman sat on, Daniel recognized her. It was the girl he knew as an adolescent boy, the best friend that was right there when he needed her, the dream that he left behind. He closed his eyes, took a breath in and just admired her. Sandra was wearing her blue denim jeans, a white V-neck, and red leather jacket, and her favorite knitted beanie and scarf (the ones he had gotten her when she fell sick two winters ago). He thought that she had looked simply beautiful. Just as he conjured up enough courage to finally face her, she got up off of the bench that she was seated on greeted the very corporate looking man (which was not exactly her type), that waved at her, with a kiss. They held hands and walked off soon after. Daniel ducked behind a large weeping willow just as she looked around.
“At least she is happy. She does deserve better than me.”
