Chapter 4

"She went to pick..." The door opened, cutting Ben's speech. "Oh, there she is," he said instead, and Blair turned to look at her friend with a smile. Nancy, a beautiful young lady with wavy brown shoulder-length hair, walked into the café with a child in her arms. She was on the short side, with eyes matching the color of her hair, and her curvy figure was the kind many would visit a doctor to achieve. She smiled as she took a seat beside Ben and handed the two-year-old toddler, who shared a striking resemblance to her, to Blair. "My baby is so heavy," she complained before yelling, "One canned soda, please." A male waiter nodded to show he had taken her order. BBN Café had grown into one of the most popular spots in town. The wide space was filled with customers, and they had hired more staff since deciding to expand a year ago. The waiter brought Nancy her soda. "Thank you, go back to work," she said with a smile. "Yes, ma'am," he replied, heading off to serve other customers. "She isn't fat, neither does she weigh much. You're just lazy," Blair teased. Nancy grinned, using a napkin to wipe the drool from her daughter's face. "Jasmine, you're so stubborn," she said with a frown, but the baby giggled, pleased with having upset her mom. Nancy frowned even more. "Leave Jasmine alone," Blair said, raising the baby. "Who's a good baby?" The baby laughed. "Jas...Jas," she giggled. "God mommy loves you so, so much, baby," Blair cooed. The baby smiled, laughing and drooling all over the place. "She's such a beautiful baby. I can't get enough of her," Blair said, placing her goddaughter on her lap. "You seem to love her even more than her mother," Ben joked. "Of course," Blair laughed along with Nancy. "Get your own baby," Ben said, laughing. "Do I go to the church and ask God to throw a child down for me?" Blair asked jokingly. "God had to throw me this child unexpectedly," Nancy commented, laughing. Ben and Blair fell silent. "I mean, he didn't give me any warning. 'She's yours now,' God probably said," Nancy added. "It's okay, Nancy," Ben said, squeezing her hand. "And then her daddy wouldn't listen to me. He said he'd be back, but he never returned. It's been three years—three!" she said, showing three fingers. "We all know he's successful now, but he doesn't want us, nor does he acknowledge our baby," Nancy said with a mocking smile. "Gusto is such a bastard," she ended and took a long sip of her soda. Their table fell quiet, apart from the noise of cars passing and people conversing in other parts of the café. "I got fired," Blair said. "The f**k?" Nancy asked. "I'm sure it's that jealous hag," she added. Blair nodded. "It's gonna be okay, baby," Nancy cooed, squeezing her hand. She smiled to reassure them. "I'll work here until I can get another job. I have to fund my parents' vacation in two months as my anniversary gift to them," Blair said. "How long is the vaca?" Ben asked. "Six months long, them and a whole lot of elderlies, touring the world," she said. "If it's too much, you can always postpone it," Nancy said. "No, I'm okay. I have my savings, and I'll get right to looking for a new job on Monday since it's the weekend tomorrow," she said. Both Nancy and Ben nodded. "Okay, now that y'all have said all you have to say, I have to tell y'all that Jaden proposed to me," Ben said, finally letting them see the shiny ring on his finger. Nancy's mouth dropped, and Blair was shocked. "Congratulations, Benedict!" both girls yelled. "Thanks so much, hunnies," he said. "I don't even know why I'm surprised. Like, y'all have been dating since high school," Nancy said. "Exactly," Blair added, patting Jasmine's back slowly after noticing she was asleep. "We should party tonight. It's been ages, girls," Ben said. "Of course," Nancy said. "I'm down for it," Blair replied. "I'll ask my parents to babysit," Nancy said, taking out her phone and going outside to inform her parents. --- **In another part of the city** Barrett sat cross-legged in a chair directly in front of a window, watching the sunset in the dimly lit room. "What's happening?" he asked. Anay stood beside him quietly. "I... I was also shocked. How could she be your mate?" Anay asked. Barrett sighed. "I know how badly I wanted to bite her, but... find out where she'll be today. I need to get my answers," Barrett said. "Yes, Alpha," Anay bowed, stepping out of the hotel room.
