Chapter 3: Whispers of Doubt

344 Words
The café was small, tucked in a quiet corner of the city, with soft lights strung above wooden tables and the faint hum of an old jazz playlist floating in the air. Lucas had insisted on dragging Adrian out of the library that evening, claiming that “books don’t make good company forever.” Adrian sat stiffly across from him, stirring his tea in slow, circular motions. He wasn’t used to this—being out with someone who seemed to want him there, who looked at him like his presence mattered. Lucas leaned back in his chair, sipping a caramel latte, watching Adrian with a half-smile. “You know, you don’t talk much, but when you do… it feels like the world shuts up to listen.” Adrian blinked at him, caught off guard. “That’s… dramatic.” “True, though,” Lucas said casually, but his eyes lingered with something deeper. The silence between them stretched—not uncomfortable, but heavy with unspoken things. Lucas tapped his cup nervously before blurting out, “What would your parents say if you… liked someone? Like, really liked them?” Adrian’s hand froze around his cup. His father’s voice echoed in his mind—lectures about honor, family, expectations. His chest tightened. “They wouldn’t understand,” he whispered, almost as if speaking louder would make it real. Lucas’s grin faltered. “Yeah… mine wouldn’t either, probably. My mom’s all I have, and she already works herself to death. I don’t think she needs more to worry about.” Adrian studied him. For once, Lucas’s usual lightheartedness cracked, and Adrian saw the boy beneath—the one who carried too much weight for someone his age. Their eyes met. For a heartbeat, neither looked away. There was something there—something fragile, trembling, waiting to be named. But fear won. Adrian looked down at his tea, and Lucas forced a laugh to cover the silence. That night, Adrian lay in bed staring at the ceiling, the question still echoing in his head: Was it worth it?
