The rooftop had always been Adrian’s escape. The concrete was cracked, the rusting rails creaked with every gust of wind, but to him it was freedom. Here, he wasn’t the perfect son, the relentless student, the obedient boy who lived under his father’s shadow. Here, he could breathe.
But tonight, it didn’t feel like his alone anymore.
The door swung open with a squeak, and footsteps padded across the roof. Adrian didn’t turn, though he already knew who it was. The faint scent of mint gum, the easy rhythm of the steps—it was Lucas.
“You really do like hiding up here, huh?” Lucas’s voice was casual, almost playful, but there was something softer underneath. He dropped down beside Adrian, their shoulders close but not quite touching. “Moon’s crazy bright tonight. You’d think it was showing off just for us.”
Adrian sighed. “You’re loud, even in silence.”
Lucas chuckled, unbothered. “And you’re quiet, even when you speak.” He tilted his head toward Adrian, grin spreading. “We balance each other out, don’t you think?”
Adrian rolled his eyes, but the corner of his lips twitched.
Lucas caught it instantly. “There it is. Smile sighting number three of the week. I should start keeping count.”
Adrian wanted to push him away, tell him to stop, but the warmth rising in his chest betrayed him. It was always like this with Lucas. He could slice through Adrian’s walls without even trying.
For a long while, they sat in silence, the city lights glittering below. Adrian leaned against the wall, eyes fixed on the moon, while Lucas sprawled lazily, staring up at the sky as though it belonged to him.
Then, without warning, Lucas spoke.
“You carry too much,” he said quietly. “Like the world’s sitting on your shoulders. And it… it makes me want to carry some of it for you.”
Adrian turned sharply, caught off guard. “Why would you want to?”
Lucas’s gaze didn’t waver. “Because I like you. More than I should.”
The words slammed into Adrian’s chest. His breath stilled, his heart kicked violently, and for a moment, he thought the world might have stopped spinning.
“Don’t joke about that,” Adrian whispered, though his voice trembled.
“I’m not joking.” Lucas leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His voice dropped lower, steady but vulnerable. “I’ve liked you since the first time you rolled your eyes at me in the library. You looked so untouchable, so locked away, and all I could think was—I want to know what’s behind those walls.”
Adrian’s throat tightened. He wanted to argue, deny it, run—but the truth was written in every quickened heartbeat, every glance he stole when Lucas wasn’t looking.
“If I’m wrong,” Lucas murmured, “if I’m imagining this… tell me now.”
The night held its breath.
Adrian’s fingers trembled, but slowly, hesitantly, they reached for Lucas’s hand. His skin was warm, grounding. Lucas’s eyes widened, and then softened, relief flooding his expression as he tightened his grip.
“That’s all I needed,” he whispered.
And before Adrian could think, before fear could claw him back, Lucas leaned in.
The kiss was soft, tentative, lips brushing like a question waiting for an answer. Adrian’s world shattered and remade itself all at once. Heat rushed through him, his heart hammered wildly, and his chest ached with something he didn’t have words for.
He froze at first, stiff, unsure. But Lucas’s hand came up to cup his cheek, thumb stroking gently, and Adrian melted. His eyes fluttered shut, and he leaned in, answering the question with trembling certainty.
The kiss deepened. Their breaths quickened. Lucas tilted his head, pressing closer, and Adrian let out a quiet sound he hadn’t meant to. Lucas swallowed it with another kiss, tender yet hungry, pulling him further into a world Adrian never thought he’d belong to.
When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Adrian’s lips tingled, his heart racing so violently it hurt.
“I’m scared,” he admitted, the words slipping out like a confession.
Lucas pressed his forehead to his. “Me too. But I’d rather be scared with you… than safe without you.”
Adrian’s eyes burned. His father’s voice, cold and condemning, still echoed in his head. The fear of being found out, of losing everything, loomed heavy. But Lucas’s warmth, his certainty, cut through it like light breaking into a dark room.
“You’re crazy,” Adrian whispered, though his hand clung tighter to Lucas’s.
“Yeah,” Lucas said with a grin, brushing his thumb over Adrian’s knuckles. “Crazy about you.”
Adrian groaned, shoving at his shoulder weakly, but Lucas only laughed, pulling him back in for another kiss. This one was quicker, more playful, but no less electric.
Minutes slipped by like seconds as they sat together, tangled fingers and whispered words filling the night. The city hummed below, the moon glowed above, but neither mattered anymore.
For the first time in his life, Adrian wasn’t suffocating. For the first time, he didn’t feel alone.
He leaned against Lucas’s shoulder, letting the warmth seep into him. Lucas shifted slightly, wrapping an arm around him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
They didn’t need to say anything else. The silence wasn’t heavy anymore. It was safe.
And under the watchful gaze of the moon, Adrian realized the truth he had been too afraid to name.
Whatever storms lay ahead, whatever battles they would face, he wanted Lucas beside him.
Always.
