CHAPTER 6 CROSSING LINES

363 Words
Night fell over the city, the streets glowing with amber light. Erica sat at her desk, fingers hovering over her phone. Every message from the unknown number pulsed in her mind like a warning bell. Meet me tonight. She stared at the text, heart hammering. Something told her she shouldn’t go but curiosity was a dangerous thing she couldn’t ignore. Meanwhile, across town, Adrian’s penthouse office was alive with silent tension. Nath watched him, as usual, waiting for the slightest sign of direction. “She’s asking questions,” Nath said carefully. Adrian didn’t turn. “Good.” “Good?” Nath raised an eyebrow. “Yes. I need her thinking she’s in control.” His voice was low, deliberate. “Let her come to me.” She stepped out into the cool night air, the city buzzing around her. The meeting place was a small, nondescript restaurant tucked between two towering office buildings. As she approached, a familiar voice stopped her mid-step. “Erica.” She spun. Hugo stood there, perfectly poised, a smug smile playing across his lips. His eyes, though, held something sharp: curiosity, maybe suspicion. “Hugo…” Her voice was cautious. “Surprised to see me?” he asked, stepping closer. “Or should I be asking why you’re here alone?” Erica hesitated. Every instinct screamed danger but Hugo’s presence was strangely grounding. Before she could answer, her phone buzzed. Two messages, one after another: Watch him. He’s not who he seems. Her fingers tightened around the device. Hugo noticed. “You’re… tense. Something wrong?” Erica swallowed. “Just… school stuff.” Hugo smirked knowingly. “You always try to hide things from me.” And then, from across the street, someone familiar stepped out of the shadows. A figure in a long coat, face partially hidden, watching. Adrian. Their eyes met for the briefest second. He didn’t move but his gaze pierced straight through her. Erica’s breath caught. Hugo followed her gaze. “Do you know him?” “Yes… I think so.” Adrian’s presence wasn’t casual. It was a calculated reminder: she was already in the game, whether she wanted to be or not.
