Chapter 29 – OtyliaRemind me to kill Death.
THE BLAZE SEARED MY LEGS as the portal sucked me in. Death’s presence lingered within it, but even facing the dark spirit’s dread was better than burning in a dragon’s flames. I hoped.
Beyond the threshold, a black sea poured over me and extinguished the blaze. But the water streamed into my mouth as I struggled for each breath. I cursed Death and closed my mouth, concentrating on survival. If this was a sea, there had to be a surface. So, I swam up with my injured arm drifting at my side.
The progress was slow. Mother had taught me how to swim in the Krowik’s current when I’d been little, but now my body refused to cooperate. It took all my focus not to panic as my lungs throbbed.
