Liam, acting as the guard, allowed Will inside late in the day. We had found a wagon and hid underneath an old, musty fabric. No one suspected the old man was actually transporting us into The Golden City.
Liam had done well in his role. He lifted the fabric, saw us, and then smiled as he covered it again, reassuring the other guards that the old man was harmless. Will drove the wagon in, and we waited until darkness fell.
Once the sun had set and the city quieted down, we finally emerged from our hiding spot. Will remained behind, but it was up to Samuel and me to get inside and free Laelia. She was our top priority, but if we happened to encounter our uncle, who was less guarded, we might take a detour.
“This way,” I whispered as we climbed out of the wagon.
