Esther met Malachi’s gaze, surprised at his expression. Not knowing what to say, she nodded before slipping from his grasp and opening the door. Closing the door behind her, she darted through the stationary traffic. She ignored the urge to check over her shoulder. She’d only known him for a few days. He shouldn’t be that important to her. It shouldn’t bother her to leave him behind. Reaching the footpath, she glanced around, trying to decide which direction to take. She supposed it didn’t really matter. She continued to walk in the direction they’d been going before taking the next left. There was no way she wanted to get anywhere near the accident. Not while she carried three daggers.
