Esther followed Malachi, wishing she had a torch too. But then she wouldn’t be able to hold a dagger in each hand. Malachi led them into a large, empty room. “He’s upstairs. Can you sense him?” She breathed out heavily. “Of course he is.” “Did you want me to go after him?” Malachi asked. “I can do this.” She didn’t know if she was trying to convince herself or him. The crackle of flames filled her mind, a memory she’d like to forget. Or at least not remember so clearly. Light filled the room and two men entered. One of them chuckled. “Put your sword away, boy, or I’ll be forced to take out my gun.” Malachi grinned, sheathing his sword and turning off the torch, tucking it into a pocket. “Won’t help you any.
