Esther lowered her gaze, fear and anger colliding in her at the tone Elvera used. “I’ll get it.” She hurried to the bedroom, frantically trying to think of a way to avoid throwing it out. Closing the bedroom door behind her she looked at the dress she wore. The garment didn’t contain a single pocket. It was a medium weight material with long sleeves that had fancy cuffs. The dress reached her knees, hugging her body, leaving no hiding places. Her gaze was again drawn to the sleeves. She rolled them up several times and tested tucking the cross inside the fold. A smile slowly formed. That should work. Hurrying outside, and through the back door, she nearly groaned when Elvera followed. Picking up her pace, she reached the bin well before Elvera and opened the lid to let it bang open again
