Marcel stood in the hallway of his employer Gregory DeMarco’s mansion.  Lord Gregory was a former soldier who had fought in the war against the humans. He had made his fortune by catching and selling humans. He owned the biggest slave trading company in the country, he had everything a man could want money, power, influence, beautiful women. But there was something Gregory wanted above all that and that was a son. His soulmate had gotten pregnant quickly after they found each other but unfortunately she and the baby both died during the delivery. After that he had tried with several of his mistresses, but the males were either stillborn or died shortly after. So, he turned to his slaves, he found a beautiful young woman with pale blonde hair and icy blue eyes.  Marcel was waiting outside Gregory’s slave’s room waiting for the doctor to come out with news of the girl who had been in labor since early morning. The doctor finally came out wiping his hands on a towel. “It’s a girl.” He informed him. Marcel sighed heavily; he knew his employer was not going to be happy to hear that he had a daughter. “Damn, I really thought she would be the one to give him a son, well maybe next time.” The doctor shook his head. “Unfortunately, that’s not going to be possible.” Marcel looked at him confused. “Why did something happen?” “Yes, unfortunately the young lady didn’t make it.” Marcel sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. “That poor girl, she will never see her baby grow up.” “I did everything I could.” “I’m sure you did your best doc.” Marcel patted the doctor on the shoulder lightly. “I will go give Gregory the news.” “Marcel,” the doctor called after him. Marcel stopped and turned to face the doctor. “Did you know that the mother was a witch?” “No, but I suspected it when I saw how fast her pregnancy was progressing.” “Witches are not meant to carry vampire offspring, I am surprised she was able to carry the baby to term, she must have been very powerful or half human.” The doctor told him. “I suspect it was the latter. If she had been half human, she probably would have survived.” “If I had known she was a witch I would have done a c-section rather than have her push. It might have saved her life.” “I’m sure you did everything you could.” He told him. “Have one of the servants take care of the baby until I can talk to Mr. DeMarco.” “You know the child has most likely inherited the mother’s abilities.” “I’m counting on that to save her life.” He said as he turned and walked down the hall making his way downstairs to Gregory's private sitting room. He knocked on the door and waited. “Enter,” Gregory called. Marcel walked inside and found Gregory sitting with his sister Vanessa who was his current mistress. Gregory looked up at him. “Well? What’s the news?” he demanded impatiently. “Do I have a son or not?” “No, sir, it’s a girl.” Marcel told him. “Damn it!” Gregory swore. “I need a son.” “Is there no woman in this damned country that can give me a son?” Gregory ranted. “I can.” Vanessa spoke, interrupting his rant. Gregory looked at her intrigued. “Really?” “Yes, I am carrying your son.” she told him, placing her hands on her swollen belly. “Are you certain it’s a boy?” Gregory asked, his voice filled with hope. “Yes, I spoke with the doctor yesterday and he confirmed that it’s a boy.” she assured him. Gregory smiled and placed his hands on her belly. “That is wonderful news my darling.” Marcel cleared his throat. “I hate to interrupt this touching moment, my lord, but what should I do with the slave girl’s baby?” Gregory looked at him. “The slave girl can keep her baby, make arrangements for her to live in a cottage or something nearby and tell her I’ll provide her with a monthly allowance.” “The slave girl didn’t make it.” Marcel told him. “Pity, I kind of liked her.” Gregory said. “Oh well, then send her away. I have no use for a girl, especially not an illegitimate half-breed.” Marcel looked at the viscount incredulously. He knew that Gregory could be cold at times, but he never expected him to be cold to one of his own children. “With all due respect my lord, a moment ago you were willing to let the mother keep the child and pay her a monthly allowance. Now you want to send the baby away.” “What is your point Marcel?” Gregory asked. “Why not just hire a nanny to care for the child and pay her the monthly allowance.” Marcel suggested. “Because I don’t want her.” Gregory said simply. “I was willing to let the slave girl keep her baby, but since she’s dead I have no use for her daughter.” “But my sir-” he started to protest when his sister interrupted him. “Brother do not argue.” She told him. “His lordship told you to send the child away, now do as you are told before he gets angry.” Gregory looked at Vanessa and smiled. He was impressed by how she ordered her brother around as if she were his superior. “Very well said my dear, you are the perfect woman to be my new wife.” Vanessa looked at Gregory and smiled. “You are going to marry me?” “Of course, my darling, you are carrying my son. I can’t have my son and heir be born a bastard.” He told her as he took her hand in his and placed a gentle kiss on it. Marcel clenched his jaw but said nothing. “As you wish, my lord.” Marcel said before he turned and started to walk out but stopped and turned back around. “Just one more thing, were you aware that the slave girl was a witch?” he asked. “No, why?” Gregory asked, looking at him confused. “Well, if the child inherited her mother’s gifts, that could help you later on.” “Brother you overstep your bounds.” Vanessa chided him. “His lordship has made his decision.” “Let’s not be hasty now my dear.” Gregory told her. “Marcel might have a point.” Vanessa clenched her jaw slightly but didn’t say anything. She knew her place was secure since she was carrying a boy. “How can a girl help me?” Gregory asked, looking at him. “She is unique, being that she is the only vampire-witch hybrid in the kingdom, she could be quite powerful when she’s older.” “That’s if she has any powers.” Vanessa spoke. “She might not have any powers when she is older, then she would just be a half-breed.” “That’s true, Marcel.” Gregory agreed. “Well, if that’s the case then you could still marry her to one of your competitors that will add to your business and help you corner the market on slave trade.” Vanessa laughed. “No man is going to want to marry a bastard half-breed slave.” “They might especially if she is as beautiful as her mother and if she is raised to be a lady. And she doesn’t have to be a bastard if you decide to acknowledge her, my lord.” “That’s not a bad idea.” “You can’t seriously be considering this.” Vanessa said looking at the viscount in disbelief. “Marcel makes a good point. What is the harm in acknowledging a girl, it’s not like she can be my heir.” “Exactly,” Marcel agreed. “She could even become the mistress of Prince Derek or Prince Edmund when they are old enough.” “That is true,” Gregory agreed. “I am putting you in charge of the girl Marcel. Make the arrangements.” He told him before turning his attention back to Vanessa. “Don’t worry, my dear you will still be my wife and our son will still be my only heir.” Vanessa smiled. “That’s good.”
