Kristina turned from looking out the train window. Outside, the view of Garden City faded into bleak, withered prairie grass, which decorated an endless expanse of flat, undeveloped land as far as the eye could see. For once, no wind appeared to be blowing, and the dry stalks stood rigidly uneven under a pale, cloudless sky. Nothing about the scenery captured her interest. She"d seen it countless times in her life. The green leather of the seat creaked as she turned to a much more interesting view: her handsome husband, who dozed beside her, their joined hands resting in his lap. A lock of shining black hair had fallen loose over his forehead, and Kristina smoothed it away with her free hand.
