The distant howl from the mountains still vibrated in my bones two days later as I stood on the edge of the training grounds.
It was the day of the annual Warrior Trials, a brutal Crescent Pack tradition where young wolves fought to prove their worth. The air was thick with the scent of dirt, sweat, and adrenaline. In my past life, I had sat in the very back row of the bleachers, watching Kaelen dominate the ring, cheering until my throat was raw, only to be mocked by the pack for my pathetic devotion.
Today, I didn't sit in the bleachers. I stood near the weapon racks, my arms crossed, watching the violent spars with detached boredom.
Kaelen sat on the raised Alpha's platform, flanked by pack elders. He looked utterly exhausted. Dark circles bruised the skin under his amber eyes, and a muscle in his jaw ticked constantly—the physical toll of his unmedicated Alpha beast warring against the rotting, half-severed mate bond. Beside him, Elara wore a smug smile, her hand resting possessively on his thigh.
Every few seconds, Kaelen's bloodshot eyes darted to where I stood. I simply stared back, a ghost haunting his peripheral vision.
"Next match!" The Head Trainer barked, slamming a heavy wooden staff against the dirt ring. "Lyra Blackwood versus... Marcus Thorne!"
A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. Marcus was a fully shifted, 200-pound enforcer-in-training with a reputation for putting his opponents in the pack hospital. Pitting him against the wolfless runt wasn't a trial; it was an execution.
Elara’s high, mocking laugh carried from the platform. "Finally, she'll learn her place," she whispered, loud enough for half the pack to hear.
Kaelen stiffened. His hands gripped the wooden armrests of his chair so tightly the wood splintered. "Stop the match," he growled, the command tearing from his throat. "She's wolfless. He'll kill her."
The Head Trainer hesitated, looking up at the platform.
Before anyone could officially call it off, I stepped over the thick rope marking the edge of the ring. My worn combat boots sank into the loose dirt.
"The match stands," I announced, my voice slicing through the sudden quiet. I locked eyes with Kaelen, watching the panic war with his pride. "Unless the future Alpha thinks I need his protection?"
The challenge hit its mark. Kaelen’s lips thinned into a furious line. He threw himself back into his chair, a muscle jumping in his cheek. "Let her fight," he spat. "If she wants to get herself killed, let her."
Marcus stepped into the ring, cracking his knuckles. He was already half-shifted; his eyes glowed a dull yellow, and his teeth had elongated into sharp canines. "I'll make it quick, runt," he sneered, saliva dripping from his chin.
He didn't wait for the whistle.
Marcus lunged, his massive hands reaching out to grab my throat. The crowd gasped, some turning their heads away.
But the world seemed to slow down. The icy power that had been humming beneath my skin since my Awakening flared to life, rushing through my veins like liquid nitrogen. I didn't just see his movement; I felt the shift in the air, the displacement of dirt beneath his boots.
I didn't cower. I didn't brace for impact.
I stepped into his strike.
With a sickening c***k, I slammed my palm upward, catching him squarely under the chin. The sheer force of the blow lifted the 200-pound enforcer off his feet. He crashed into the dirt, coughing up blood, his yellow eyes wide with absolute terror.
The training grounds went dead silent. The only sound was the rustle of the wind through the pines.
"Is that it?" I asked, looking down at him.
A guttural roar ripped from Marcus’s throat. Humiliated and enraged, he let his wolf completely take over. Bone snapped and muscle tore as he shifted into a massive brown timber wolf. The beast snarled, digging its claws into the earth, and launched itself at me, jaws snapping for my neck.
Shift.
The ancient command echoed in the deepest recesses of my mind. It didn't hurt. It didn't break me apart like the elders said shifting would. It felt like coming home.
A blinding flash of pure, radiant light erupted in the center of the ring.
The crowd screamed, shielding their eyes. When the light faded, I was no longer standing on two legs.
I looked down at paws as large as dinner plates, covered in fur as pristine and blinding as fresh snow. I was massive, easily standing a full head taller than Kaelen’s Alpha form. The cold power radiating from my body caused the ground beneath my paws to crystallize with frost.
A pureblood White Wolf.
A creature born only once in a millennium, blessed with a direct bloodline to the Moon Goddess herself.
The brown wolf, Marcus, hit the invisible wall of my aura and collapsed into the dirt, whimpering. He pressed his belly into the frost, submitting instantly to a dominance that dwarfed any Alpha in the territory.
A heavy thud echoed from the platform.
I turned my massive, glowing silver eyes toward the sound. Kaelen was on his knees. He had staggered out of his chair, his face entirely devoid of color. The arrogant, untouchable Alpha was staring at me, his mouth opening and closing as his brain completely short-circuited.
Elara had fallen backward over her chair, her manicured hands covering her mouth in sheer horror.
"A White Wolf," one of the elders whispered, dropping to his knees. "The Goddess has blessed us..."
One by one, the Crescent Pack warriors dropped to the dirt, exposing their necks in total, absolute submission. Within seconds, hundreds of wolves were kneeling before me.
The rotting mate bond in my chest suddenly flared with frantic, desperate energy. Kaelen was projecting a chaotic storm of emotions through the tether—shock, intense regret, and a possessive, territorial hunger. He realized, in one world-shattering moment, exactly what he had thrown away.
He tried to push his Alpha command through the bond, trying to force me to acknowledge him, to accept his claim now that I was no longer a "runt."
I let out a low, rumbling growl that shook the bleachers. The frost spread rapidly from my paws, freezing the grass, the dirt, creeping up the wooden posts of the platform until it stopped inches from Kaelen’s kneeling form.
My silver eyes burned into his terrified golden ones.
I wasn't a blessing for the Crescent Pack. I was their reckoning. And my fangs were already bared.
