Chapter 4: The Royal Arrival

965 Words
The frost from my paws had just reached the wooden legs of Kaelen’s chair when a horn blew from the southern watchtower. The deep, resonant sound shattered the stunned silence of the training grounds. It was a Royal horn. Three short blasts, followed by one long, drawn-out note. The Lycan King’s Vanguard was entering Crescent Pack territory. I remained in my White Wolf form, the icy air swirling around my silver fur. The Crescent pack members, who had just dropped to their knees in submission to me, scrambled frantically to their feet, their eyes wide with a new, much more immediate terror. Even Kaelen snapped out of his shock. He staggered backward, his Alpha aura completely swallowed by the overwhelming, suffocating pressure that suddenly blanketed the entire clearing. The air grew heavy. My keen ears picked up the synchronized thud of massive paws hitting the dirt, followed by the grinding crunch of heavy armored tires. I shifted back into my human form, pulling a spare oversized tunic from the weapon rack to cover myself. The lingering frost in the air kept the pack warriors at a terrified distance from me. From the treeline, ten massive Lycan warriors stepped into the clearing. They didn't walk; they prowled, their bodies practically humming with lethal intent. Each one stood over seven feet tall in their half-shifted state, armor glinting under the autumn sun. Behind them rolled a custom, armored black SUV. The vehicle came to a slow, menacing halt near the center of the training grounds, crushing the frost I had just laid down beneath its massive tires. The Crescent Pack was completely silent. Kaelen quickly shoved Elara behind him, wiping a bead of sweat from his pale forehead as he hurried down from the platform. He bowed his head, exposing his neck in the ultimate sign of submission. "My King," Kaelen choked out, his voice trembling slightly. "The Crescent Pack is honored by your unexpected arrival." The rear door of the SUV opened. The man who stepped out didn't just enter the clearing; he commanded it. He was towering, broad-shouldered, and dressed in sharp, tailored black. His hair was dark as midnight, and his eyes—a terrifying, glowing crimson—swept over the kneeling pack with bored indifference. Darius Thorne. The Lycan King. The most ruthless and powerful predator on the continent. His mere presence made my newly awakened wolf whimper in my mind, not out of fear, but out of an ancient, instinctual reverence. The heavy, rotting tether of the mate bond in my chest, which Kaelen had refused to snap, suddenly felt insignificant compared to the raw gravity this man possessed. Darius didn't even look at Kaelen. He didn't acknowledge the future Alpha kneeling in the dirt. His crimson eyes swept past the elders, past the shivering Elara, past the bleeding enforcer still groaning on the ground. Then, his gaze locked onto me. The world stopped spinning. The wind died in the trees. The moment his red eyes met my silver ones, a jolt of pure, crackling electricity shot down my spine. It was a sensation entirely different from the sickly, twisted bond I shared with Kaelen. This felt like a supernova exploding in my chest. Mine. The ancient, rumbling voice echoed directly in my mind, so powerful it made my teeth ache. Darius ignored Kaelen completely. He began walking toward me, his long strides eating up the distance between us. The Lycan guards immediately flanked him, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle and steel. Kaelen panicked. Seeing the King walking straight toward the girl he had publicly humiliated and rejected, the future Alpha scrambled to his feet. "My King," Kaelen stammered, stepping into Darius's path. "She is... she is Lyra. The pack runt. She just experienced a delayed shift, we haven't even properly evaluated her—" Darius didn't slow down. He didn't even blink. He simply lifted a single, leather-gloved hand and flicked his wrist. An invisible wave of pure Lycan dominance slammed into Kaelen like a freight train. The Crescent Alpha was thrown backward, his boots skidding across the dirt before he crashed hard into the wooden platform. A sickening c***k echoed through the clearing as Kaelen gasped for air, clutching his ribs. "Do not speak of her with that filthy mouth," Darius’s voice was a low, rumbling baritone that vibrated through the earth itself. He stepped around Kaelen’s groaning form and stopped directly in front of me. Up close, he was even more terrifying. The scent of rain, steel, and dark amber washed over me, intoxicating and overwhelmingly safe. I tilted my head back to meet his gaze. I didn't kneel. The White Wolf inside me refused to bow to anyone, even a King. To my shock, Darius didn't seem angry. The cold indifference in his crimson eyes melted into a look of absolute, consuming devotion. He slowly dropped to one knee, ignoring the gasps of horror from the Crescent Pack. He reached out, his massive, scarred hand gently wrapping around my trembling fingers. He pressed his lips to my knuckles, his skin burning against mine. "I have searched for you for three centuries," Darius whispered, loud enough for every wolf in the clearing to hear. "The Moon Goddess has finally granted me my Second Chance Mate." He stood up, towering over me, and smoothly pulled me against his chest. His arm wrapped securely around my waist, a heavy, unyielding claim. He turned his crimson gaze toward Kaelen, who was watching from the dirt, his face twisted in a mixture of physical agony and absolute disbelief. "She is my Queen," Darius declared, his Lycan aura suffocating the entire pack. "And if any of you so much as look at her the wrong way, I will burn this territory to ash."
