Chapter 4: The Shadow Between Us
The morning after their walk by the river, Lily found herself smiling without realizing it. Every memory of Ethan brought warmth to her heart. She had never met someone who made her feel so calm and understood.
As she arranged books on the shelves of the bookstore, the bell above the door chimed.
It was Ethan.
He held a bouquet of white lilies.
"I remembered you said these were your favorite flowers," he said shyly.
Lily's eyes widened in surprise.
"You remembered?"
"I remember everything about you."
She accepted the flowers, her cheeks turning pink.
"Thank you, Ethan. They're beautiful."
The two spent the afternoon talking about their childhood dreams, favorite books, and the places they hoped to visit someday. With every conversation, they felt closer.
As evening approached, Ethan walked Lily home. Just before they reached her gate, he hesitated.
"Lily... there's something I've wanted to tell you."
She looked into his eyes.
"What is it?"
"I've never met anyone who makes me feel the way you do."
Before Lily could answer, a black luxury car stopped beside them.
The back door opened.
A beautiful young woman stepped out, dressed elegantly and wearing dark sunglasses.
She looked directly at Ethan.
"So this is where you've been."
Ethan's smile disappeared instantly.
"Victoria..."
Lily looked from Ethan to the mysterious woman, confused.
Victoria walked closer and folded her arms.
"You left without saying goodbye," she said coldly. "Now I find you holding flowers for someone else."
"It's not what you think," Ethan replied.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"Oh, I think I understand perfectly."
She turned to Lily.
"My name is Victoria. Ethan and I have a history."
Lily remained silent, unsure of what to believe.
Victoria leaned closer and whispered, "Be careful. There are things about Ethan that you don't know."
Without another word, she got back into the car and drove away.
The street fell silent.
Lily looked at Ethan, waiting for an explanation.
He lowered his head.
"I wanted to tell you about my past... but I was afraid."
Lily took a deep breath.
"I don't care about your past, Ethan. I only want the truth."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"You deserve that. Tomorrow, I'll tell you everything."
As they said goodbye, neither of them noticed Victoria watching from the end of the street.
She smiled to herself.
"If the truth doesn't separate them," she whispered, "I'll make sure something else does."
The night grew darker, and the first real test of Lily and Ethan's love had finally begun.
