Chapter 9: A Dangerous Secret
The sun rose over the quiet town, but peace did not return to Ethan and Lily's lives.
After the frightening night at the warehouse, Ethan insisted on taking Lily home.
"You should stay somewhere safe for a few days," he said.
Lily smiled faintly.
"I won't let fear control my life. But... I'd feel safer if you're with me."
"I promise," Ethan replied. "I won't let anything happen to you."
For the first time in days, Lily felt a little hope.
Meanwhile, Daniel sat alone in an abandoned cabin deep in the woods. His escape had only made him angrier.
"They think they've won," he muttered.
One of his men entered the room.
"We found something."
He handed Daniel a sealed envelope.
Inside was an old photograph of Ethan's father shaking hands with Daniel's father many years ago. Behind the photo was a faded letter.
Daniel read it carefully.
His expression changed from anger to shock.
"This... can't be true."
The letter revealed that Ethan's father had tried to save Daniel's family, but another powerful businessman had secretly betrayed both families for his own gain.
Daniel had spent years blaming the wrong people.
That evening, Ethan invited Lily to dinner at a quiet restaurant overlooking the river.
"I've been thinking," Ethan said.
"About what?" Lily asked.
"When all of this is over, I want us to start a new chapter together."
Lily smiled.
"I'd like that."
Just as Ethan reached across the table to hold her hand, Victoria rushed into the restaurant.
"Ethan!" she called.
Both of them stood up.
"What happened?" Ethan asked.
Victoria struggled to catch her breath.
"It's Daniel... he's discovered something. Someone else is behind everything."
Before anyone could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
The restaurant fell into darkness.
A loud crash echoed through the room.
People screamed.
When the emergency lights came on a few seconds later, Victoria was gone.
Only a single white rose lay on the floor where she had been standing.
Attached to it was a note.
"If you want the truth, come alone."
Ethan picked up the note with trembling hands.
Lily looked at him with fear in her eyes.
"What do we do now?"
Ethan folded the note and took a deep breath.
"We find Victoria... and uncover the real person who has been controlling everything from the beginning."
Outside, a figure watched the restaurant from a parked car.
A cold smile appeared on the stranger's face.
"The game has only just begun."
