***Dr. Monteil***
"Oh, look at the time." I mouthed, gazing out the window as the sun was setting. "I better get going soon." Smiling at Avery. It was nice talking with him, just the thought of having to speak with him was keeping me from the pretentious picture I had with the world. Just being with him gave me a sense of meaning for this life.
I could feel him being disappointed, his eyes shifted as I walked over the door. I can't believe we clicked and became friends the moment we talked with each other. I don't want to pretend either, I kind of wanted to stay and talk to him as much as I loved the idea of sharing ideas with him.
I walked down the street feeling rough cracks through thin soles, the wind moving as if I weren't there at all, as if I were a ghost and nothing more. Through closed windows comes a jangle of tunes, all of them with as much flow as ice. And all at once, the air is water and I'm drowning in this sea of indifference, desperate to swim up beyond cloudy skies to the stars above.
The silence, deadly as I walked over to my car. My car parked adjacent to the left of the building, I clicked on my keys to start revving up the engine. Opposite to the parking car, there were two pickup trucks, parked next to each other, the engine still running.
I paused just outside, clicked on my phone to not draw any attention as I peeked closely.
I could tell that there were two men outside, waiting for something. I couldn't quite look closely, since it was dark. Two men with well-built bodies, one was smoking, and one with a binocular in hand. Maybe they were there to look at the stars, since there were lesser trees around the area.
I shrugged and entered my car. It still felt hostile as I entered. 'f**k it,' I mouthed. I revved up my engine and subtly drove off. I drove opposite in their direction, curved around the curb, and slightly parked over for them not to notice. Something was off, something was really off, I can feel it.
It started to rain. I grabbed my phone and dialed in a number of people whom I knew. My phone rang, as the receiver picked up the phone, knock, went on the car window. It was one of the well-built men, standing over 6 feet, crouching to get a better look inside. 's**t,' I muttered. Did they notice?
"Keep it low, someone's coming over." I muttered on my phone and placed it over my passenger's seat.
I rolled down my window slightly and smiled at the guy. "May I help you sir?" Waiting for his response.
"We seem a bit lost, are you from around here?" He mouthed with a very low-toned voice.
"Oh, I work here and was about to go home. Where were you guys headed anyway?" I asked calmly just to reduce the tension between us.
"Yeah, is this Morningside hospital?" He asked.
I nodded in reply, "Visiting hours were over a while before, you guys could return tomorrow morning." I added.
"Oh, we're not here to visit," he looked over to the other guy and signed something as if they were up to no good. "Do you by any chance know any patients named Auclair?" He continued.
My heart pounded. "Hmm, I don't know, I'm sorry," I replied, concealing the fear I had in my eyes.
He grinned, "Well, thank you anyway doc." He then proceeded to where the other guy was standing.
No, this can't be.
I rolled my window up and continued driving away. I put my phone on speaker and muttered "Get Chantal."
"Right away sir."
Chantal on the phone.
Chantal: What is it, Beau?
Beau: The Auclairs are in danger.
Chantal: How many?
Beau: Two, but I know there are more.
Chantal: On it, I'll alert the others.
Beau: Thanks Chantal, I'll call you back when we are on our way.
Chantal: Roger, stay safe, Beau.
Call ended.
I drove quietly behind the hospital premises. It was pouring vigorously. It may take time for them to enter, but the hospital won't allow it. Good thing I had a pass from behind. I rushed over, wet as it may, I needed to keep the Auclairs safe.
I rushed over to the stairs. I hoped no one would notice. Through the halls of the second floor, I rushed to Avery's room first.
I swung the door open, there, Avery sat, looking over the window.
Eyebrows furrowed, he asked, "Did you forget something, doc?"
"Avery, there's something you need to know." I mouthed. He noticed the urgency and stood up immediately from his bed. "Avery..." The glass from the windows noised a loud smash as the glass shattered and smoke entered the whole room.
I grabbed him from his arm, removed the needled dextrose from his hand and dragged him out of his room. Damn, they were quick.
"What's happening?" Avery's nervous voice shouted.
"I'm sorry, I'll explain all of this later."
Two of the receptionists from the center of the hallway handed me bandages, as if they knew what was happening. I grabbed Avery's hand and wrapped it over to prevent the bleeding. I apologized for being so rough, removing the needles. He winced as the bleeding continued.
"Sir, you need to get out of here quickly." The receptionist muttered.
I nodded in reply and assisted Avery to safety.
"What about my mother?" His eyes teary, not knowing what was happening.
"I'm so sorry Avery," I had to do it, otherwise he would slow me down if he tried to fight back and run to his mother. I gently knocked him out by hitting him from his neck. He passed out immediately, carrying him gently as we silently exited the building.
I rushed towards my car, laying Avery at the back of the car. I started the engine and called Chantal.
Chantal on the phone.
Chantal: Beau, the hospital's been infiltrated.
Beau: I know, did you transfer Mrs. Auclair?
Chantal: Yes, she's being transported over. How about her son?
Beau: Good. Avery's here with me. We're off to the rendezvous point.
Chantal: Noted, I'll send you the coordinates.
My car screen then popped up the coordinates, letting me know where we were headed.
Beau: Thank you, Chantal, I'll ring you up when we're almost there.
Chantal: Alright.
Call ended.
"My sincerest apologies Avery," I muttered. I should've known, this would've been averted beforehand. I should've kept them both safely when I had the chance.
"I promise, I'll explain everything to you once you get up."
