I looked at the mirror in the laundry room, tracing the darkened red-purple marks on my neck. I did my best to find a shirt that could cover them. Except for the fact that I barely have any clothes, the one that was under my ear was something I couldn’t really hide. I didn’t know anything that could cover the evidence of what Elijah did to me last night. The thought of it made me squirmish. I initially didn’t know what it was. It was the first time I saw myself getting these kinds of bruises. I never had them, even at the worst beatings I had. They felt tingly to my touch. Bruises were supposed to hurt. But this didn’t.
