Chapter 16

823 Words
The Whitecliff throne had always been Rowan Hale's greatest dream. Now... It was his. Morning sunlight poured through the towering windows of the royal throne room, painting long streaks of gold across polished marble floors. Nobles lined both sides of the hall, their heads bowed as petitions were presented before their new king. Rowan listened without expression. A dispute between merchants. A request for repairs to the eastern bridge. Complaints about wolves stealing livestock from the northern villages. He answered each matter with calm authority, his voice steady, his decisions swift. To the people watching, King Rowan Hale appeared every inch the ruler Whitecliff needed. Confident. Wise. Strong. No one could see the shadows growing behind his eyes. When the council finally ended, Rowan dismissed everyone with a wave of his hand. The massive doors closed. Silence returned. Only then did he allow himself to breathe. He walked slowly toward the throne Marcus had once occupied. For several long moments, he simply stared at it. "I finally have it." The words echoed through the empty hall. Yet... The victory felt strangely hollow. No matter how many times he sat upon the throne, he could not silence the memory of Marcus's final moments. His brother had not begged. He had not cursed him. Even with Rowan's blade buried in his chest... Marcus had looked at him with sadness rather than hatred. That expression haunted him. A knock sounded. "Enter." Celeste stepped inside. She had become Queen of Whitecliff at last. The crown she had dreamed about now rested upon her head. She smiled warmly as she approached. "The council seems pleased." "They're obedient." "They're afraid." "There is a difference." She laughed softly. "You've always known how to command people." Rowan said nothing. Celeste studied him carefully. "You haven't been sleeping." "I'm sleeping." She raised an eyebrow. "You've started lying to me now?" Rowan walked toward the window overlooking the city. "I keep hearing footsteps." "What?" "I wake at night thinking someone is walking outside my chamber." Celeste frowned. "There isn't." "I know." "But I hear them anyway." For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face. "You're exhausted." "No." His voice became colder. "I'm cautious." He turned toward her. "Have the guards doubled around Braham's residence?" "They have." "And the palace?" "Every entrance is watched." "And Marcus's old commanders?" "The loyal ones have either sworn allegiance..." "...or disappeared." Rowan nodded slowly. Still... Something felt wrong. He couldn't explain it. The palace was secure. His enemies were dead. The nobles feared him. Yet peace refused to come. A captain entered hurriedly and dropped to one knee. "Your Majesty." Rowan's eyes narrowed. "What is it?" "The western villages report rumors." "What rumors?" The captain hesitated. "Some claim King Marcus was murdered." Silence. Rowan descended the steps of the throne. "Who started them?" "We don't know." "Find out." "And if they continue?" The captain lowered his head. "We understand." After the man left, Celeste sighed. "You can't execute every person who whispers." Rowan looked at her. "I don't need to." "I only need to execute enough that the rest stop whispering." Even Celeste fell silent. She had always admired Rowan's ambition. Lately... She had begun to fear it. That evening, Rowan wandered alone through the palace gardens. Snow covered every path. The Moon Lilies had long since disappeared beneath winter frost. He stopped before a stone bench. Elara had once sat there, smiling as she spoke about wanting children. Without warning, the memory flooded back. He clenched his jaw. "Forget her." He told himself the words. Instead... He remembered her final expression. Not anger. Not hatred. Confusion. As if she still couldn't understand why he had betrayed her. His hand tightened into a fist. "She would have ruined everything." The words sounded convincing. Even to himself. Behind him, footsteps crunched softly in the snow. "My King." Rowan turned. It was his spymaster. The older man bowed deeply. "Our watchers continue observing Healer Braham." "And?" "Nothing unusual." "He continues treating patients." "He rarely leaves his home." "He speaks to no one privately." Rowan studied the man. "Continue watching." "For how long?" "As long as he breathes." The spymaster nodded. "As you command." When he was gone, Rowan looked toward the distant horizon. Something inside him refused to settle. He had lied to the kingdom. Buried the truth. Silenced witnesses. Destroyed every obstacle in his path. Yet every morning he awoke with the same feeling. That somewhere... Somehow... Something had survived. Far away, beyond Whitecliff's walls, snow continued falling over the roads leading toward the Capital. Rowan watched the storm without knowing why it unsettled him. Then he quietly whispered words no one else heard. "Stay dead." The winter wind carried the words away. But somewhere beyond those mountains... The woman he believed buried beneath Whitecliff was drawing her next breath. And fate had already begun weaving the threads that would one day bring them face to face once more.
