**Darkness Approaches** Asher's eyes gradually adjusted to the enveloping shadows, each heartbeat echoing in the silence. He strained to catch any distant sound, but all he could hear was Ember’s uneven breathing, sharp with fear. “Asher, what’s happening?” she whispered, her voice quivering like a fragile thread. He reached out, his fingers intertwining with hers in the dark. “I don’t know,” he murmured, his tone low and steady, “but I promise, I won’t let anything happen to you.” As he spoke, an icy breath seemed to swirl around them, thickening the darkness into menacing pools that threatened to swallow them whole. Every instinct within Asher screamed for him to flee, to drag Ember away from this growing dread. But it was already too late. A faint whispering slithered through the room, the words slurred and indistinct, yet brimming with a sinister edge. Ember's grip tightened around his hand, her eyes wide and glistening with terror. “What is that?” she gasped, glancing around in desperation. Asher’s muscles tensed, his face hardening into a mask of resolve. “I don’t know, but we need to get out of here—now!” Just as he began to pull her toward the door, the whispering escalated, the words crystallizing into a chilling message. “Ember, don’t trust him.” Asher’s heart raced, panic clawing at his throat as he locked eyes with Ember. In that moment, confusion and fear swirled together, leaving him to question everything. What was happening? And who was casting this dark shadow over them?
