SECOND CHANCE

Elena Marshall’s chest felt tight, but not from the usual panic that had haunted her for months. This tightness was different. It was ready. A quiet fire burning low in her belly. For the first time in weeks, her hands weren’t shaking as she clutched the USB drive and the thick manila folder to her chest like battle armor. Today, Adrian Vale would finally see her. Not as “the girl who ran off stage like a child.” Not as “the Lilly stalker,” but as Elena Marshall, the woman who had built the entire Valentine’s campaign from raw creativity. A small, proud smile tugged at her lips as she walked down the hallway toward the executive conference room. She could see her reflection of her determined expression stare back at her from the glass windows. She was dressed smartly; Cream blouse, perfectly tucked into her black pencil skirt that hugged her curves, hair pinned up in a neat bun. “Ms. Marshall. Inside, please. Now.” The executive secretary’s voice was carefully neutral, but her eyes flicked to the USB in Elena’s hand with something uncomfortably close to pity. Everyone knew. Of course they did. Word of her outburst yesterday had spread like wildfire through the building. Angel had already filled her in earlier that morning in hushed tones while they were at the water cooler: how some coworkers were whispering that Elena had tried to pull a pathetic prank and ended up embarrassing herself instead. The “lily girl” who cried over stolen ideas. Her reputation was in tatters. But today, she will fix it. Elena stood steady outside the double doors, taking one deep breath. Jerome had already slipped inside, shockingly empty-handed except that smug confidence he always carried like a second skin. Her phone buzzed violently in her skirt pocket. She almost ignored it. This meeting was everything. But the buzzing grew more insistent, raising the hairs on her neck. She stepped to the side, glancing at the screen. Mimi, Her younger sister. Elena answered quickly, pressing the phone to her ear. “Hello?” “You need to hurry, Elena. Mom’s… Mom needs—” Mimi’s voice broke into harsh sobs. Elena’s heart dropped like a stone. “Calm down, Mimi. Breathe. What’s going on?” “She… There's blood everywhere. I just stepped out for groceries and came back to… we need to start dialysis right now. Please, Elena. She’s coughing so much blood.” In the background, Elena could hear her mother’s weak groans and cough. The steady beep of machines that were barely keeping her alive. Tears slipped down Elena’s cheeks before she could stop them. She squeezed her eyes shut, gripping the phone tighter. “I’m coming. Just hold on.” She ended the call, chest heaving. Then another notification lit up her screen. A payment alert. Really? She opened it immediately. She needed money so bad for her mom. But surely she wasn't expecting anyone to send her money. Jerome Cole has sent you $50,000. Message: For your silence. Transfer pending. Do not speak in the meeting or it will be canceled. Fifty thousand dollars. Elena stared at the number, vision blurring. The latest hospital bill was $48,300. She had memorized it like a painful prayer. With this money, her mother could get the emergency dialysis. Maybe even a few more weeks of stability. Maybe this is God answering, she thought desperately. Maybe I don’t have to fight today. Her fingers shook as she typed back: I accept Jerome. But I won’t be able to wait for the meeting. I need to go right now. I need to go see her. Please don’t let them take my job. He read it instantly but didn't reply. Then the message showed: Blocked. Elena’s blood turned to ice. She looked up. Jerome stood by the open conference room door, watching her with that wide, victorious smirk. He was already setting up his laptop and projector, calm as ever. He had evidence too. He was ready for war. He knew. Elena moved before her brain could catch up. She rushed inside, the door swinging shut behind her. They were the only ones there for now. “Please, Jerome,” she whispered, voice cracking as she grabbed his sleeve with both hands. The words tore out of her, raw and desperate. “Don’t do this. I need to go right now. Just tell them the truth. I could really use this money. My mom needs treatment. She’s in the hospital right now, on oxygen. Please, I—” Jerome looked down at her hands on his expensive shirt like they were something filthy. His expression didn’t soften. “Get your filthy hands off me.” He shoved her hard. Both of his palms slammed into her shoulders, Elena’s unsteady legs gave out instantly. “Argh—!” Pain exploded through her tailbone as she hit the cold marble floor. The USB flew from her grip, bouncing once before skittering under the long conference table. The manila folder burst open, papers scattering everywhere like broken dreams. Sketches of perfume bottles, mood boards, scent profiles. Evidence of months of her soul poured onto paper now littering the ground. Her laptop slid across the floor, the screen cracking with a sickening sound. Disheartening to her as she had been managing it just as it. Everything. Gone in one push. The conference room door opened suddenly. Adrian Vale stepped in, tall and commanding in his tailored suit, those piercing green eyes taking in the scene. Victoria followed right behind him, elegant in her designer dress, her face shifting from confusion to sharp anger. The room fell into a heavy, terrifying silence and no one spoke. Elena stayed on the floor, unable to get up immediately. Her hands moved on autopilot, gathering the torn papers with trembling fingers. One sketch, her favorite bottle design with delicate heart motifs. The one that Jerome proposed without giving her credit. She pressed it to her chest like a mother protecting her child. Hot tears streamed down her face and she didn’t wipe them. They just kept falling. “What’s happening here?” Victoria asked finally. Her voice was sharp. Elena couldn’t answer. She wiped her face roughly with her sleeve, pressing her lips together to hold back a sob. She had lost. Not just the presentation or the credit. She had lost the fight entirely. Jerome always won. He took and took, leaving her with bruises and apologies. She stood slowly, knees screaming in protest. With quiet dignity, she placed her employee ID card on the polished conference table. Then she turned and walked out, leaving the scattered mess of her life behind. She quit. Life was so f*****g unfair. At the main exit, a calm voice stopped her. “Where are you going?” Elena turned. Victoria Vale stood a few feet away with her eyes narrowed. Angel was beside her, clutching some of the salvaged sketches, ink slightly smeared but still intact. Adrian was nowhere in sight. Elena’s fragile control shattered. She burst into tears. In deep guttural sobs that sounded like a wounded animal. Employees began gathering and staring but she didn’t care anymore. “Why?” she screamed, clutching her chest. “Why does he just want to destroy my life? I’ve given him everything. My all. So please… help me ask Jerome why I can’t have this one thing!” She fell to her knees on the cold pavement. Angel rushed forward, pulling her into a tight hug. Elena cried into her shoulder, body shaking violently. “Somebody… ask Jerome why I can’t have this money,” she sobbed loudly, eyes wild as she searched the growing crowd. “I need it for my mother’s bill. Would I let her die? What should I do? W-what do I do?” Her whole body trembled. Security guards hurried toward her and no one moved to stop them. Victoria simply stood there, watching with pity in her eyes. Elena pressed her forehead against Angel’s shoulder, whispering “Please” over and over, smaller and smaller until it was just empty air leaving her lungs. ‘Please let my mother live.’ “Stop,” Victoria said suddenly, voice cutting through the chaos. The guards paused. She stepped closer and held out the gathered papers. “You dropped these.” Elena stared at her own work in Victoria’s manicured hands. “Put yourself together,” Victoria continued coolly , “and meet me back in the conference room. Don’t you dare keep your boss waiting… or you might not even get your salary this month.” She humped and walked away.
