6: Sunday: Horker Comes Across IT was cold and a thin rain was falling when Callaghan parked his car at the garage and walked round to his apartment. As he entered, Wilkie came out of his glass box. 'There was a telephone call for you, Mr Callaghan,' he said. 'It came through at 10.10—about four minutes ago. It was from Mr Darkie. He said he'd like to have a word with you. And a Mrs Riverton called.' Callaghan took off his wet cap, felt in his coat pocket for a cigarette. 'What did she want?' he asked. 'She wanted to see you,' said Wilkie. 'She left this note.' He handed over the envelope. Callaghan went up to his apartment and took a hot shower. He put on a fresh suit, then stood looking at the envelope from Thorla Riverton. He tore it open.
