MEET Mr Valentine Gagel.
Mr Gagel was a lawyer with a definite sense of his own limitations. While other lawyers have, on occasion, been known to overstep the mark, no such accusation could be brought against Mr Gagel. He knew just where to stop.
His office, not a mile from Dover Street, was well-furnished, cosy and inclined to invite confidence. His clientele consisted in the main of a number of young ladies most of whom seemed to have spent their lives falling into unforeseen circumstances which placed them— temporarily— at the mercy of married gentlemen— usually over middle-age— who had 'taken advantage' of them and, in the process, entirely ruined a life which up till then had been officially spotless.
