Chapter Three~Coma

1091 Words
I didn't sleep The walls of my room closed in around me like a cage, the silence loud and suffocating. My helmet sat in the corner, blood stained and a cruel reminder of what happened hours ago. I still felt the chills. Jace's broken body. The fire. The blood. His voice begging “Please….take me to the hospital” My screams broke the quiet 'It's my fault’ I sobbed, curling into myself on the cold tiled floor. “I made him fall…i crashed him ... .what if he dies?” Arms wrapped around me–soft and shaking. My mother pulled me against her chest, stroking my hair, rocking me like she did when I was five and scared of the dark “Shhh, baby, it's okay," she whispered. “You're not at fault. It was an accident” “I touched his bike, mama…i pushed it ... .I was angry and I snapped and now he's…..what if he dies?” My chest heaved as panic took over, my nails digging into my arms until I felt skin break “If his pack finds out it was me” i choked “I'm finished, they will kill me. Mama, they will tear me apart and parade my helmet in the streets” “They won't” she said firmly, clutching my face in her trembling hands “He’s alive, kira. He is in a coma, but he’s alive and that means there's still a chance of surviving” But I couldn't breathe. All i saw was his body hitting the pole….the way it crumbled beneath him…the way he looked at me before the crash The door creaked open My father stepped in, heavy boots thudding on the floor. “Wipe your tears,” he said. “You won” I stiffened He walked closer, arms behind his back. “You did what you were trained to do. That's what racing is–some crash, some burn, some die but you brought home the title, the badge, the glory” I pushed away from my mother's arms and stood up, fists clenched “You think this is about a badge?” I shouted “He could’ve died! And I was the one who made him fall” His eyes narrowed “Watch your tone” his nostrils flaring up “You don't get to shut me up anymore” I screamed “You're not the one who's going to dream about blood every night, you're not the one who’ll see his face every time I close my eyes. You don't carry the guilt, the fear. I Do” The slap came very fast. My head snapped to the side, hair falling over my face. I stumbled back, dizzy, the sting burning across my cheek “You speak to me like that again” he growled “and you will be beaten like a thief” “After all the sacrifices, the wins, the tears, the suffering. This is what I got” tears bursting from my eyes. “You think because you race, means you are a son to me” his voice thundered. “You are still weak..a weak female and that is what you are always going to be” I stared at him stunned but something broke inside me. Something that refused to fear him anymore “Do your worst” i whispered “I'm done living for you” The door bursted open again Selene, his favorite daughter, stood in the door. Polished lip and a perfect curvy body “Oh, so now you're brave?” She sneered, walking in “Just because you became a fake male for a while, you think you get to challenge our father? Is that what this is all about?” I opened my mouth but she kept going. “You should channel that fake alpha energy towards your wretched mother..maybe if she’d given him a son from the start, none of this would've happened” My blood boiled. I lunged at her “You b***h” But before I could reach her, my father stepped between us and shoved me back. I fell to the floor again, the second slap came harder than the first. I gasped, pain exploding in my jaw, my ears rang, my vision burring. My mother screamed, steeping between us. “THAT'S ENOUGH” She pushed him back, eyes blazing with tears and anger. “She's your daughter! Not slave” He stared at her like she’d lost her mind “I’ve kept quiet for years, Dema. Let you mold her into something she's not. I watched her suffer, watched her shrink just to survive your ambition, but I'm done watching” I wiped the blood from my mouth and slowly stood up. “I'm quitting,” I said, voice low. “I'm not doing this anymore, no more races, no more lies,no more masks. I'm not your weapon” His mouth opened in disbelief “I want to go to school” i said “i want to learn, make friends, maybe even ... .fall in love. I want to try things normal girls try and I wouldn't hide for you anymore” “You can't,” he snapped. “You’ll expose us all. The council will never forgive the lie, if they find out you’ve been pretending to be a male Alpha in competition—” “Then let them deal with it” I said The silence that followed felt like a void Then my mother stepped forward, voice shaking. “You..you don't have to rely on kira anymore, Dema” He looked at her. “I was going to wait” she whispered “But maybe now’s the right time” her eyes flicked to me “I'm pregnant” My breath hitched “And the pack doctor says it is a boy” “A male?” He whispered, barely audible For the first time, I saw his eyes widened She nodded “You wanted a successor, now you have one” A long silence He looked at me “Fine,” he said stiffly. “If she wants to be a child again. So be it” He turned toward the door, Selene clutching behind “She’ll be sent to Ferrowood Academy” he said coldly. “The strictest boarding school in the northern region. She wants education? She'll get it but under control” My heart thudded. Ferrowood. The place they send rogue-bloods and broken alphas. But even then…a spark of hope flickered.
