Life as a wealthy wife was, in truth, rather dull, an endless rotation of gym sessions, beauty appointments, and afternoon tea gatherings. After a while, the routine wore on me, so when Mrs. Webb brought in an invitation from Mrs. Calloway, I turned it down without a second thought. Another parade of wealth and status, so what was the point?
But Mrs. Webb told me that Gerald had specifically asked me to go. Mr. Calloway was his current business partner, and he needed me to help strengthen the relationship. I had no choice. I changed into a gown and headed over.
The afternoon tea gathering was held on the garden terrace at the Calloway estate. The wine and pastries were beautifully laid out, and they were far more to my taste than I had expected. Without thinking, I drank a little too much.
My head swam, and I felt as though I might sink to the ground at any moment. Not wanting to make a scene, I forced myself up and went inside to find the restroom, hoping that if I could make myself sick, I might sober up.
The problem was that the Calloway estate was enormous, and every member of the staff was out in the garden. There was no one to ask for directions. In my confusion, I stumbled into a room I didn't recognize, a private room.
The moment I opened the door, a heady fragrance washed over me. It smelled extraordinary, and I breathed it in deeply without thinking.
Within minutes, my body felt feverish. My mouth went dry, and something stirred inside me, restless and searching, with nowhere to go. I pressed my legs together just to find some relief.
I looked up and around the room and froze. The walls were lined with personal pleasure devices of every conceivable shape and size. Some were so realistic that just holding one was enough to make me blush. The dimensions alone were beyond anything I had ever imagined.
Between the wine and the aromatic diffuser, my head grew heavier by the minute. Without quite realizing what I was doing, I reached for one of them and put it to use.
The sensation nearly brought me to my knees. It had been so long since I had felt anything like it.
I stayed in that room for a long time. When I finally emerged, I walked straight into Mrs. Calloway.
She looked at my still-flushed face and smiled, slow and knowing.
I apologized at once. "I'm so sorry, I got lost, and I was in a bit of a state. I wandered in by accident."
Mrs. Calloway waved it off and reached up to touch my still-warm cheek. "Life does get a little dull, doesn't it?" she said. "You should find yourself a hobby. It would do you good."
