The idea didn’t sit well three days later. Sophia was almost tempted to drop the entire thing and remain in her apartment downing copious amounts of cookie dough ice cream. He was still coming into work, but breaking it off would have been awkward to say the least. Plus, it might jeopardize the deal her entire company was excited about.
Still, she had second thoughts about the whole thing. Not only that, she was certain that Kay would have planned someway to humiliate her further. Showing up with Jasper would only drag him into the mess. She didn’t want that not when she was just beginning to like him.
Taking an opportunity, she ambushed him in the Men’s Room. It took some reconnaissance to make sure he was the only one in there. She intended to only be there for a moment.
He liked her boldness at asking him out for dinner. He agreed drawing out the moment watching her nervousness increase the longer she was in there. In fact, he was tempted to keep her there until someone else showed up. However, he let her leave keeping their rendezvous a secret.
Since, it was her time to get dinner, she scrounged around trying to get an idea. She finally settled on just picking up a pizza since time was short. He didn’t seem to be the vegan type so she had them throw some pepperoni on.
Putting the pizza on the counter, she rushed around quickly picking up things. It wasn’t perfect when he rang the doorbell. A final glance around not really satisfied but having no choice, she went to answer the door.
He walked in as if he owned the place. “What’s up?” He asked.
“I have pizza. I hope you like it. I had some pepperoni added,” she said avoiding the larger conversation for a moment.
He allowed him to be distracted by food for the moment knowing something was up. She wouldn’t have asked him over in such a compromising position if it wasn’t important.
“That’s fine,” he replied a bit happy that she had thought of him when getting pizza. It was one of his favorite toppings if a bit predictable since lots of others like it as well.
Grabbing plates, they served themselves. He was thinking they should go to a real restaurant sometime. He thought maybe they could go on a date. But then the engagement party was a date. It did seem like a lot of pressure though and there was this possibility of having to go home before the party. It was necessary since there were some details that could apparently only be worked out face to face. However, he suspected it was a ploy to get him back home.
Finally, she got the courage to broach the topic on her mind. “I want to skip the engagement party.”
“Why? He asked.
“I can’t stand to see them together. But truthfully, I think Kay might do something to embarrass me. I know she has something up her sleeve. I am absolutely sure of it,” Sophia said pacing .
“What’s got her so angry at you?” He inquired.
“I am not sure. She was always mean. She stole my high school boyfriend and then had the audacity to steal my fiancé. Thing is I can’t figure out why she hates me so much.”
“Okay,” he said.
“Okay what?” She looked at him.
“We won’t go. Besides, I may not be here for the party.,” he stated.
“Why not?” Sophia asked.
“That business deal is requiring me to go back. Apparently, my company is having issues that I need to personally straighten out if this deal is to be completed,” he sighed. “The timing of the whole thing could mean missing the party even though I was greatly looking forward to seeing you all dressed up. How about we go on a real date instead?”
“You are asking me on a date?” She parroted back.
“Yes, I am pretty sure I am,” he answered.
“Yes. I will go on the date with you,” she answered.
“Good,” he smiled. “Saturday at 8:00 pm then.
“That’s fine,” she answered.
He got up to leave. “I will see you then.”
“See you then,” he said closing the door behind him.
Sophia sat down on the couch finally coming to terms with the fact that she actually had a date. A bundle of nerves settled in her stomach. Could she really go on a date after all that happened? Her mind reeled at the possibility.Panic set in as her mind tried to justify moving on. Clearly, her fiancée had since he was marrying Kay after such a short time.
She stayed awake most of the night trying to come to terms with the whole idea. For a shot time, she got angry at Jasper for having to bail on the engagement party. It was a good thing she had canceled. Otherwise., she didn’t know how she would have dealt with all of that if he didn’t show.
It was sometime after midnight before she finally fell asleep. The next morning was going to be brutal at work with so little sleep.
