Sophia woke up to the alarm with a major hangover. Unfortunately, she had to work a and deeply regretted her night out.
Moving slowly made her late for work . However, no one noticed. There was a frenzy going on. Panic had gripped the entire office. Rumors abounded that some sort of big-wig was set to visit and they just had to be impressed. A billion dollar deal was at stake. If it wasn’t made, the entire office would be fired according to the rumors.
Sophia scoffed at those rumors and settled into her desk. It was easier to keep her head down and at least pretend to work than to feed into the rumors with a headache pounding into her head.
A sudden silence had her looking up. A bold stride accompanied by a flurry of activity caught her attention. Her mouth fell open at the sight of the man walking. It was her Mr. Nobody. It seemed impossible that he was here.
He stopped when he got to her desk saying, “Hello, Sophia.” Her mouth dropped open even wider. Seemingly pleased by her reaction, he moved toward the offices leaving her stunned and speechless at her desk.
He thought it was ironic seeing her here. He wasn’t expecting to see her though. The meeting was pure chance. But seeing her reaction in that way was quite satisfying.
A mob of co-workers swarmed the desk wanting to know how she knew the rich guy in the suit. Some were already displaying jealousy that she had even knew him. Sophia plopped her head on the desk in an attempt to escape but the questions still came, Deciding to hid in the restroom, she fled her desk as a manager walked in seeing the swarm and sending everyone back to their desks.
The respite in the bathroom was temporary when the door creaked open and he walked in the ladies room.
Her embarrassment turned up a notch as she stood at the sink with the water running.
“What are you doing here?” she gestured wildly. “You do know this is the girl’s bathroom.”
His smile grew. He liked seeing her off-balance.
“I wanted to talk to you in private. Well, actually I wanted to give you a lecture on drinking too much and then asking a stranger to take you home.
Sophia groaned. “So, you know how I got home?”
“Yeah, I took you.”
“Well, that explains a lot,” Sophia stated. “However, I still don’t know your name.”
He smiled again. “You were talking so much that I didn’t have a chance.”
“What is your name and don’t tell me that it’s Mr. Nobody.”
He chuckled at that. “The name is Jasper.”
“Jasper,” she said trying his name out. He liked the way she said his name.
“I should leave. I am sure they are wondering what’s taking me so long,” he said and walked out not seeming to care if anyone saw him or not.
Sophia waited until her heart calmed down before she left. Getting back to work, Sophia kept her head down until it was time to leave. She kept thinking about him throughout the day. The last thing she was expecting was to see him waiting for her in the parking lot.
“I still have to give you that lecture,” he stated.
“Fine, but could we talk somewhere else?” she inquired.
“I will meet you at your apartment in an hour if that’s okay with you. I will bring the food,” he said.
“Sure, I guess,” Sophia stated.
“You sound unsure,” he replied. “We can meet another time.”
He turned to walk away. “Wait,” she called. “An hour’s fine.”
He nodded and turned away. Panicking she gunned the car out of the parking lot in a rush to get home and tidy up from the disaster she created this morning. Shoving clothes into drawers and scooping up trash, she managed to get things in order before frantically washing dishes in case they needed plates and silverware. The task finished she fled to the bathroom to repair her appearance.
A knock on the door meant he was on time. Mentally cursing, she calmed herself on the walk to open the door. He was right on time
The smell of food hit her as he walked in. Sophia’s hunger caused her to led him straight to the kitchen. He placed the food down and picked up the invitation to the engagement party.
Sophia’s mood changed quickly. “Sorry, meant to toss that. It’s form my ex-fiancé who happens to be marrying my nemesis from high school. They sent it to me to rub it in. Let’s just eat and forget that exists,” she explained.
He put it down as they filled their plates and sat down to eat. After putting away the food, they moved to the couch.
“You were at the club last night. You got me home,” started Sophia trying to break the awkward silence between them.
He leaned back. “Yeah, I was. I did wonder why you drank do much and then ran out of there like a hound chasing you.”
“They were there at the club following me,” she stated. “I went to like three clubs and they showed up at every one of them.”
“Sounds like one of your friends is a mole,” he said.
“I suppose so but I have no idea which one,” she mused.
“Are you going to that engagement party?”
“No way, I am living that heartache over again .”
“I understand,” he said remembering his own heartbreak and the reason he walked out of his brother’s wedding.
“I am so angry. I can’t believe they would do that to me. I was betrayed by both of them. Now, I found out that one of my friends is betraying me. I want revenge,” she yelled.
“ How about going with me?” He asked in a moment of impulse. “Bring a hot date and prove you moved on. That might throw them off a bit.”
Jasper considered what might have happened if he had been able to bring someone like Sophia to the wedding.
“Okay,” she said. “I’ll go with you. It might be the dumbest idea ever.”
“Probably,” he agreed.
