Awoken

Aria POV Heat was the first thing that reached me. Not the sharp kind that burns, but a slow, enveloping warmth that flowed through my body like molten gold, steady and alive. It seeped into my chest, unfurled down my spine, and settled into my arms and legs, coaxing sensation back into places that had gone numb. I dragged in a breath. It scraped my lungs painfully. That pain grounded me. I was alive. A dull ache throbbed at the side of my neck, deep and persistent, as though something beneath my skin was still awake. I lifted my hand without thinking and sucked in a breath when my fingers brushed the tender spot. My eyelids parted. Stone stretched above me, smooth and unfamiliar, carved with purpose instead of neglect. Lantern light flickered softly across the ceiling, painting the room in amber and shadow. There was no rot in the air. No mildew. No scent of old anger and forgotten corners. This was not my aunt’s house. I breathed in slowly. Pine. Smoke. Earth. And something sharper beneath it something wild that made my pulse stutter. “She’s conscious.” The voice snapped through my haze. I tried to sit up too fast. The world lurched violently, my vision spinning until nausea clawed at my throat. When the dizziness eased, my heart slammed against my ribs. They were everywhere. Wolves. Some stood upright, wearing human skin like borrowed armor, muscles tense and alert. Others remained fully wolf, massive bodies crouched low, eyes glowing with intelligence and caution. I swallowed hard. “Where… am I?” No one answered. They murmured instead, voices hushed but heavy. “She should not have lived.” “That bite would have killed her.” “No human survives that.” The words tightened around my chest like wire. My hand drifted to my neck again. Heat pulsed beneath my skin, spreading outward, rhythmic and unsettling. The door opened. The entire room reacted instantly. Bodies straightened. Heads lowered. Some dropped to one knee. He stepped inside. Tall. Broad. Controlled in a way that felt deliberate, like restraint wrapped around something lethal. Power clung to him, invisible but undeniable. And his eyes Silver. My breath stalled. I had seen them before. In sleep. I remembered dreams that left me unsettled at dawn. Now they were fixed on me. “Are you hurting?” he asked. His voice was even, measured, but tightly held. “My neck,” I admitted. “It feels like it’s on fire.” His jaw flexed. “She should not be awake at all,” someone muttered. The sound that came from him was low and restrained, but it carried weight. The room fell silent. He turned back to me. “You’re safe.” No one else looked convinced. Their stares crawled over me, uneasy and sharp. “Why do they look at me like this?” I asked quietly. He paused. An older woman stepped forward, her presence calm but heavy with knowledge. “Because you survived something that should have ended you.” My stomach dropped. “Survived what?” “The Alpha’s bite,” she said. “You are the first human who has.” The word echoed. First. “What happens to the others?” I asked. “They die,” the Alpha answered flatly. The room went still. “How?” I pressed. Silence answered. I forced myself to meet the healer’s gaze. “Tell me.” She hesitated. “Alpha venom carries raw wolf essence. A human body cannot withstand it. The heart fails. The blood burns itself out.” Jayce nodded. “Usually very quickly.” Cold seeped into my bones. Then a sharp laugh sliced through the tension. Zari stepped forward, arms folded, eyes hard. “I said this from the beginning. Humans are fragile. That is why they don’t survive.” The healer snapped, “That is enough.” Zari ignored her. “She shouldn’t be breathing. And she definitely should not be here.” Lucar turned. Just that movement made the air shift. “Zari.” One word. Her posture stiffened. “You will not address her that way again.” The authority in his tone sent a shiver down my spine. Zari’s confidence wavered, jealousy flaring openly now. “What does it mean?” I asked softly. The healer swallowed. “You did not simply survive.” Lucar’s shoulders tensed. “Explain.” “She stopped breathing. Her heart ceased. She was gone.” Jayce whispered, “That’s impossible.” “And yet,” the healer said, eyes on me, “she returned.” Fear rippled through the room. Zari stepped back. Lucar stared at me as if I were something that defied the laws he lived by. “It means the bite killed you,” the healer continued. “And something else brought you back.” My throat tightened. “What am I?” No one answered. I tried to stand. The world tilted violently. Strong arms caught me before I hit the floor. Lucar. His grip was firm, instinctive, pulling me against him as if my weight meant nothing. The room froze. “You shouldn’t move yet,” he murmured. “I’m fine,” I lied. “No,” he said simply. “You’re not.” Zari’s voice cut in sharply. “You can’t touch her!” Zari wasn’t just another wolf. She stood like someone who believed the future already belonged to her. Like the pack had been hers long before I arrived. She had grown up beside Lucar. Trained with him. Loved him openly, without shame or restraint. Everyone knew what she expected to become. And now she was staring at me like I was the thief of that destiny. “She’s manipulating you,” Zari snapped. “Humans always do.” Lucar’s eyes flashed silver. “Enough.” The word slammed through the room. “She is under my protection,” he said. “Anyone who disputes that…” His gaze hardened. “…answers to me.” Zari fell silent. “What if saving me was a mistake?” I whispered. “What if I don’t belong here?” Mira stepped closer. “What is your name?” “Aria.” She nodded slowly. “You are alive for a reason.” Zari scoffed. “A cursed one.” Lucar growled. A warning. Then he lifted me fully into his arms. “What are you doing?” I breathed. “Taking you somewhere secure.” “Where?” “My quarters.” Zari gasped. Jayce smirked. Lucar ignored them all. As he carried me away, fear twisted inside me but beneath it was something else. A strange certainty. As if something ancient had awakened. And it knew my name.
