My father’s words made my entire body go stiff.
I clenched my jaw and could see the way Lucien inhaled beside me as if to steady himself. Lucien was one to control his emotions very well. To see that he couldn’t keep his cool here surprised me, but this situation was far worse than anything we had ever experienced.
My mother spoke up next as he turned her eyes to fully face us.“I do not think you both understand,” she said, her voice quiet. “Just what you've done to us...to this kingdom?”
I opened my mouth to speak and closed it back immediately. What could I possibly say in this kind of situation? It felt like everything I could say would be utterly wrong. Any explanation would feel useless.
