1348 Words
Damilola left Richard's suite hastily. She needed to go to the cafeteria to eat with Clara. It was lunch break already and today, she and Clara were given the chance to eat at the cafeteria. Immediately she got to the reception, she dragged Clara with her to the cafeteria. "Hey, where have you been? I have been looking all over for you" "Well, that's a story we'd rather leave for later. I am famished" "Okay, but I need the whole gist, okay?" "Yes, yes, yes, I've heard you, can we go eat now?" "Of course, you of all people should know that that question shouldn't be asked from me?" "Tsssk, you glutton" "Whatever." They both walked to the cafeteria laughing and talking about random things. After their lunch break, they got back to work. Few hours later, their shift finally ended. Damilola and Clara went into the restroom, changed to a casual outfit, while they waited for the people who were next in line to take over from them. As they walked to Damilola's car, Clara remembered she left something behind and excused herself. Damilola walked to the car alone, as she sat at the driver's seat waiting for Clara. Sitting there looking idle and just scrolling through random things, she remembered the iPad. She ran back into the hotel immediately to look for it, luckily for her, it was there resting on her desk. She picked it up and walked back to her car. Walking on, she caught a glimpse of someone. ********* Clara who had finished what she went to do inside the hotel, got to the car but Damilola was no where to be found. She leaned on the car as she waited for Damilola's arrival. She waited for almost half an hour and just when she was about to go back in to look for Damilola, she saw her walking quietly out of the hotel like she was in thoughts. "Gosh! Finally, girl, finally, where have you been? You made me wait for almost half an hour." "Sorry, babe, let's go," Damilola replied, giving Clara a smile as she walked to the driver's seat. "What do you think you are doing?" Clara asked. "Obviously driving us home, you know." Damilola replied. "Girl, I told you I'll drive" "Okay, fine, take the wheel," Damilola said handing her the keys to the car. "I am never letting you drive me again. You will be the death of me," Clara said. Damilola had sat on the passenger's seat in front already, deep in thoughts. Clara turned on the ignition and began to drive. There was complete silence in the car. Clara kept sneaking glances at Damilola. This silence between them was unusual. Did something happen? Clara couldn't bear this silence any more. Something had to have gone wrong. This was so unlike Damilola, she needed to know what was wrong. "Hey," she said calling out to Damilola, waiting for a reply, but there was none. She just kept on starring out through the window. "Hey Alex, you're alright?" Clara said again tapping her. Damilola jolted out of her thoughts and stared at Clara in confusion "What the heck was that for? You could have just called me, stupid." "And you think I didn't?" "Yeah, if you did, I definitely would have answered you" Clara rolled her eyes at her and said worriedly. "Alex, what's wrong? You are acting weirdly." Damilola smiled and said. "I am fine, Okay? No need to be worried, I just remembered something." "And you expect me to believe that? Wait a minute, Alex, what do you take me for? A dumb i***t? I am your friend, Alex and if I am not right about something bothering you, I am not worthy to be called your best friend." "Wow! Clara, it hasn't gotten to that. Okay, fine, I will tell you what's bothering me." "Now, that's what I am talking about. I'm all hears, spill it." "I have gotten a new job," Damilola reported. "What? You went job hunting without telling me? Are you really going to leave me all alone in the hotel? What happened to our promise to each other to always stick together." "Shush girl, I am not leaving you." "Then if you aren't leaving what are you gonna do?" Clara replied starring at her suspiciously. She was definitely not going to allow Alex take the job and leave her. They are both gonna get a job at the same company. If they parted ways like this, what will happen to their friendship? "Would you just keep quiet and let me speak?" "Okay, fine." She wasn't going to let her take the job anyways, so, it won't be a problem to hear her out. It's not like it will change her mind. "This afternoon, an hour before lunch break, someone came to me and told me Mr James wanted to see me. I went over to his office and he told me he wants me as a P.A........" "What? Mr James? You're kidding, right?" "Girl, would you just let me finish?" "Okay, ride on" "I asked if he had a P.A and he gave an affirmative answer. So, I asked what he needed me for and he said for a friend and when I asked who the friend was, he-he-ahhh-ummm, he said 'Mr Richard' Is the person," Damilola said in a rush. "Which Mr Richard?" "Richard Brown McCall," Damilola blurted out, pissed off by her friend's stupidity Just when Damilola thought no matter what, there will be a limit to Clara's stupidity, Clara placed the back of her palm on Damilola's neck. "There seem to be no problem. You seem to have no temperature but what just came out of your mouth couldn't be said by someone who isn't sick. Probably you are but not just showing the symptoms." "Clara, I'm being really serious right now, okay? I was shocked also." "Wow! Girl, how is this even possible?" "I don't know, I really don't. It's freaking me out, babe, I am so confused." Damilola said fast, not giving herself a chance to breathe "Calm down, breathe. Yeah, slowly. That's it. Now tell me in detail, all that unfolded. What did Mr James tell you?" Damilola breathed in and out severally before disclosing to Clara all that happened, not leaving out any detail. "This sounds weird. Mr Brian would definitely not have recommended you." "I know right? There definitely is something fishy." "Nah, what could possibly be fishy? Mr Richard didn't even know you before, did he? It might have really been Mr Brian that recommended you." "If you say so." "I will be alighting soon, would you come take the wheel? Or should I drive you home and take a cab." "Come on girl, I am no liability, neither am I a child, I can drive myself home. Let's drop you off at your place, while I find my way." "Okay, drive safely. I will see you at work on Monday," Clara replied as she pulled up in front of her house, gave Damilola a hug and came down from the car. After Clara alighted from the car, Damilola took the wheel and drove herself home. On her way home, she couldn't help but ruminate over all that happened today. This looked like a dream. When she went back into the hotel, she saw Mr Brian and thanked him for recommending her, but he laughed and said he could never have done that. What the heck was going on? As different thoughts flooded her mind, she got to her house. She pulled up in front of the house took her bag and the i-pad. "The i-pad! Yes the i-pad, what is the use of this thing?" She thought. She picked it up, put the I-pad on and began to check it out. There was nothing special on it apart from her to-do-list for the one week. "Like seriously? A to-do-list? Does this guy really have to be this extravagant in his spending? Gosh! He will really be the death of me".
