Tyler froze. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he said quickly, his tone firm but controlled. But she shook her head violently, panic rising in her chest. “Please… I’ll be quiet… I won’t say anything… just don’t—” her voice broke as tears filled her eyes. Tyler felt something twist painfully inside him. She wasn’t even seeing him. Not really. She was seeing someone else. Someone who had taught her to react like this. “Look at me,” Tyler said, his voice deeper now, commanding without being harsh. She flinched at the tone. That alone told him everything. Tyler exhaled slowly, forcing himself to soften his approach. “Hey,” he said again, quieter this time. “You’re safe here.” Her breathing was uneven, her chest rising and falling too fast. “No one is going to touch you,” he added. She stared at him, searching his face like she didn’t know whether to believe him. “Where… where am I?” she whispered. “My room”, Tyler replied. “You passed out. I brought you here.” Her fingers tightened around the sheets. “I… I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said quickly, the words tumbling out like a reflex. “I swear I didn’t—”. “You didn’t,” Tyler cut in firmly. She went silent. “You didn’t do anything,” he repeated, holding her gaze. For a moment, she just stared at him. Then her shoulders trembled slightly. Tyler noticed everything—the way she kept her distance, the way her eyes flickered toward the door like she was calculating an escape, the way her body stayed tense, ready for something bad to happen. “Who did that to you?” he asked suddenly. The question hung in the air. Her reaction was instant. She froze. Then slowly, she shook her head. “I… I don’t know what you mean,” she whispered. Tyler’s expression hardened. “The marks on your back,” he said, his voice low. “Those aren’t accidents.” Her face drained of color. For a second, it looked like she might pass out again. “I said I don’t know,” she repeated, but her voice was weaker now, unconvincing. Tyler stood up. She immediately shrank back, panic flashing across her face again. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he said again, more firmly this time. He stopped a few steps away from the bed, careful not to get too close. “But I’m not stupid either.” Silence. “You flinch when I move,” he continued. “You apologize for things you didn’t do. You look at me like I’m about to hit you. ”Each word hit harder than the last. “That doesn’t come from nowhere.” Her lips trembled. Tears slipped down her cheeks before she could stop them. “Please…” she whispered. “Don’t ask me.” Tyler’s jaw tightened. For a moment, it looked like he might push further. But then he saw it— The fear. Not just fear of him. Something that still had control over her. Tyler took a step back instead. “Fine,” he said quietly. She looked up at him, surprised. “But whoever did that to you…” his voice darkened again, “they don’t get to touch you anymore.” Her breath hitched. “You don’t understand,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s not that easy—" “It is,” Tyler cut in. The confidence in his voice made her pause. “As long as you’re here,” he continued, his gaze locking onto hers, “no one lays a hand on you. Not anymore.” Something about the way he said it… It didn’t sound like a promise. It sounded like a fact. She stared at him, uncertainty and something else—something softer—flickering in her eyes. Hope. But it was fragile. Like everything else about her. Tyler turned slightly, running a hand through his hair as he tried to control the anger still simmering beneath the surface. “Get some rest,” he said after a moment. “Your body needs it.” She hesitated.
