The thought of someone hurting her like that made something dark stir inside him. His gaze returned to her face, now pale and peaceful in unconsciousness, as if her body had finally given up fighting. “She fainted because of stress,” Loe continued softly. “Her body is constantly on edge. People who go through this kind of abuse often develop severe anxiety… sometimes even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.” Tyler didn’t reply. Instead, he reached out and carefully pulled the blanket back over her, as if shielding her from the world. But the calm movement didn’t match the storm burning in his eyes. “Find out who did this,” Tyler said quietly. Loe looked at him. Loe studied him for a moment. He had known Tyler long enough to recognize that tone. It wasn’t just anger. It was a promise. Loe exhaled slowly. “I’ll make some calls.” Tyler didn’t respond. His attention had already shifted back to the girl lying on his bed. Fragile. Too fragile. Loe grabbed his bag and moved toward the door but paused before leaving. “She might wake up disoriented,” he said. “Don’t push her. People like her… they scare easily.” Tyler gave a slight nod, though his expression didn’t change. When the door clicked shut, silence filled the room. Tyler sat beside the bed, his elbows resting on his knees as he watched her. For someone who had clearly endured so much… she looked peaceful. That didn’t sit right with him. His gaze drifted to her face, then to the blanket covering her. He could still see it in his mind—the scars, the marks, the evidence of pain carved into her skin. A slow anger burned in his chest. Whoever did that to her… His jaw tightened. They wouldn’t get away with it. A faint movement pulled him from his thoughts. Her fingers twitched. Tyler straightened immediately. Another movement—her brows furrowing slightly, her lips parting as if trying to form words. Then slowly… Her eyes fluttered open. For a brief second, confusion clouded her gaze as she stared up at the unfamiliar ceiling. Then she turned her head. Her eyes met Tyler’s. And everything changed. Fear. Raw. Immediate. Instinctive. She gasped sharply and scrambled backward, her body reacting before her mind could catch up. The sudden movement made her wince, but she didn’t stop. “No—no—don’t—!” she cried, her voice trembling as she pressed herself against the headboard. Tyler froze.
