Chapter 16: The City of Conflict Bartas and Lucas hurried to the marketplace. Terrified citizens stumbled through the debris ridden streets, their eyes filled with a primal horror. Lucas caught a brief glimpse of something protruding from a pile of debris as he and Bartas sprinted passed a cramped alleyway. Lucas stepped back toward the entrance. His eyes hadn’t deceived him. He had seen something truly ghastly. “Bartas, look,” he said softly with a wave. “Damn…” Bartas murmured. A lifeless hand dangled from the pile of rubble. “It looks like they were crushed. It’s so small. It must have been a child,” Lucas said. Bartas grasped Lucas’ arm. “We have to go, Lucas. Whoever they are we can’t help them now.
