CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
At the end of the day, Gabe stood on the sidewalk and watched Andy board the school bus. When she turned and waved at him, his face burned hotter than a campfire. At least he thought she aimed her arm in his direction. He couldn’t tell for sure. No matter. Maybe he’d go visit her sometimes. He snapped his fingers. “Dang! I forgot to ask where she lived.” He ran toward the bus, hollering, “Wait, wait, Andy. What’s your address?”
Too late. The bus pulled away from the curb, and he stood arm waving in the air as it vanished from view. To make matters worse, a familiar voice called, “Hey, who’s the girl?”
Instead of answering his sister, Gabe gritted his teeth and took off in a run. “No questions now,” he yelled back, but the wind whipped the words out of his mouth.
