CHAPTER NINE Gabe’s eyes popped open, his arms still reaching for the sky, his knees bent but unable to move. “What the heck did I hear?” “Move away from the edge, kid.” A second voice echoed inside Gabe’s head. “Don’t listen to this dude, Blubber. Jump.” His knees shook. Without moving, he called, “Who’s there? What do you want?” “Stop stalling,” the second voice said. “Jump, coward.” The first voice said, “Don’t do it, kid.” His head pounded. It’s my imagination. No one’s here but me. Just do it. NOW! He shut out the voices, looked straight ahead, and leaped forward. For a second, he fell. Then strong arms wrapped around his chest, and he floated down, down, down. He landed on soft grass instead of sharp rocks and flowing water. The rush of water over the falls echoed in his ears.
