CHAPTER THIRTEEN
While they walked home from school, Gabe kept turning his head so Lindy could not see the bald spot. He had checked on it in the restroom mirror, and it didn’t look too bad, barely visible. Once, she slowed down a couple of steps and must have caught a glimpse of his bald spot, because he heard a sharp gasp. She said nothing but fire burned in her eyes, and she grew quiet, unusual for her. It struck Gabe as kind of funny—his ninety-pound sis always ready to defend him, the heavyweight of the family. He refused to weigh himself. Some things he’d rather not know.
As soon as they reached the house, she hung her Do Not Disturb sign on her bedroom door and shut herself inside the room.
