CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE After supper, Grandpa left for his night job while Gabe helped his sister wash the dishes and put them away. Then he retired to his room to think about the twists and turns of the day. He closed the bedroom door and paced back and forth, head ducked, brain on overload, muttering to himself. “What if Mick really has a nice side? What if Andy really cares for me, as a special friend? What if Lindy’s exercise program helps me lose weight? What if? Two small words, but enough power to change a life. Mine.” He paused and stared out the backdoor window. Faint light from the moon, distorted by the crack in the glass, danced across the yard. Some small critter skittered through the grass. “Hey, little rabbit or squirrel or whatever. What are you doing out there in the dark?
