CHAPTER 19: THE WHISPERS
The whispers started the next morning.
"Did you see him catch the arrow?"
"He let her heal him."
"The king is getting soft."
At lunch, a maid brought her soup.
Red soup. Steaming.
"For the lady," the maid smiled. Too wide.
Lithia lifted the spoon. The bond screamed.
*DON’T.*
She dropped it.
Drayk was suddenly there. He wasn’t even in the room before.
He walked to the maid. Calm.
"Drink it."
The maid paled. "My king, I—"
"Drink. It."
She ran.
Drayk smelled the bowl. Silverthorn. Poison.
He shattered it against the wall.
"Who sent it?" Voice too soft.
No one answered.
He looked at Lord Morveth. The one who whispered loudest.
"Lord Morveth. Come here."
Morveth walked forward. Sweating.
Drayk put a hand on his shoulder. Friendly.
"Do you think I’m weak?"
"No, my king—"
"Good."
His claws came out. One second.
Straight through Morveth’s chest.
Blood. Screams. Everyone froze.
Drayk pulled his hand out. Didn’t even look.
"Clean it."
He grabbed Lithia’s wrist. Dragged her out.
In his chambers, he locked the door.
Lithia was shaking. A little. Her hands were cold.
Drayk saw it. Looked down at his own hands. Covered in blood. Morveth’s blood.
He stepped back. Fast. Like she burned him.
He stared at his hands.
"Are you scared of me now?" he asked. Low voice. He didn’t look at her.
Lithia looked at his b****y hands. Then at his face.
"No."
He looked up.
"No," she said again. Louder. She walked to him. Grabbed his b****y hands with hers.
"You saved my life."
Gold light started to glow from her hands. Cleaning his blood away.
Drayk’s breathing broke. Shocked.
"I’m not scared of you," she whispered. "I could never be scared of you."
He rested his forehead against hers. Just for a second. That second was too long.
"I felt you about to die through the bond," he whispered.
"I can’t... I can’t protect you if you keep almost dying."
Through the bond, no words. Just his heartbeat going crazy.
And hers answering.
