“How's that possible?” I asked, my voice shaky.
The doctor adjusted his glasses slightly, before setting the file down.
“That,” he said, “is exactly what I can't seem to figure out.”
I looked at him closely, the banging ache in my head increasing.

Beside me, Adrian surged forward. “Hold on,” he rasped, his brows drawing together in a hard line. “Are you actually saying someone fed this to her?”
The doctor let out a long, weary breath. “I can’t speak to the intent just yet,” he replied.
“But I can tell you this substance didn’t find its way into your body by accident.”
