Chapter 11

The air in the study was suffocatingly hot. For several long seconds, neither of them moved. Aurora's hands were still locked around Adrian’s wrists, her fingers digging in with a strength she didn't know she possessed. She could feel the hard bone of his arms, the steady, heavy pulse under his skin. She was glaring at him with a raw, unyielding fury, waiting for him to back down. But Adrian didn't pull away. Instead, a slow, dark, and utterly terrifying look of admiration filled his eyes. The shocked expression on his face warped into something much deeper, much more dangerous. He looked at her flushed cheeks, her parted lips, and the wild, defiant fire in her eyes. It was like he was watching a beautiful wild animal finally baring its teeth—and it only made him want to cage her more. "A fight?" Adrian whispered, his voice incredibly deep and husky. A slow, mocking smile touched his lips. "You think you can fight me, Aurora? In my house? On my land?" "Try me," she spat, lifting her chin. "You might have bought my father’s debt, Adrian, but you don't own my mind. You can lock the doors. You can throw away my clothes. But the second I find a way out of this estate, I am leaving. And you will never see me again." The smile instantly vanished from Adrian’s face. The threat of her leaving hit him like a physical blow. The possessive fury returned to his eyes in a heartbeat, burning hotter than before. His grip on her shoulders tightened, his fingers pressing into the soft cream silk of her dress. "You aren't leaving," he growled, his face dropping so close to hers that their noses almost touched. "I didn't spend a year hiding in the dark, watching you suffer, just to let you walk away the second I finally have you. If I have to lock every door in this house and keep the keys in my pocket, I will. If I have to carry you back here myself every single time you try to run, I will." "Then you are no better than Damian!" she yelled, her voice cracking with a mix of anger and frustration. "You're just a child who wants a toy he can't have!" "I am not a child!" Adrian roared, his voice booming off the glass walls of the study. Before she could scream, Adrian grabbed her wrists, pulling her hands off his chest and pinning them against the wooden door above her head. He pressed his entire body against hers, his heavy, hard frame completely trapping her. The heat radiating from him was overwhelming, making her dizzy. "I am a man, Aurora," Adrian whispered, his breathing ragged as his eyes locked onto hers. "And I have wanted you for so long it has nearly driven me insane. Do you know what it was like? Sitting at that dinner table, watching him ignore you? Watching him make you cry, while I had to sit there and act like I didn't care? I gave you the cold shoulder because if I didn't, I would have killed him. I would have taken you right there in front of everyone." Aurora stared at him, her chest heaving against his. The raw, unfiltered obsession in his voice was terrifying, but as she looked into his dark eyes, she didn't feel the paralyzing fear she used to feel with Damian. She felt a dangerous, electric surge of power. She had made him break. She had made the untouchable, cold CEO lose his absolute control. "You're a monster, Adrian," she whispered, refusing to look away, her voice sharp and steady. "I am," he agreed, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. "But I'm your monster. And you're going to have to get used to me." "I will never get used to this," she said, her voice cold. "Now, let me go." Adrian stared at her for one more agonizing second, his chest rising and falling as he fought to control his breathing. Slowly, deliberately, he released her wrists. He took a single step back, giving her space, but his eyes never left her. Aurora immediately pulled her hands down, rubbing her wrists. She didn't look defeated. She squared her shoulders, smoothed down her silk dress, and took a step around him, heading toward the study doors. "Where are you going?" Adrian demanded, his voice instantly turning sharp. "To my room," Aurora said, not looking back. "And if you come near me tonight, Adrian, I swear I will burn those blank canvases in the art room to ashes." She pushed the heavy study doors open and walked out, her heels clicking loudly against the polished concrete floor. Adrian stood in the center of his empty study, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. He looked at the open doorway where she had just disappeared. His heart was hammering wildly, his blood running hot. He had expected her to be scared. He had expected her to cry, to beg, or to quietly accept his protection like she had accepted Damian’s neglect. But she had fought back. She had looked him dead in the eyes and threatened him. And as Adrian leaned against his desk, a dark, breathless laugh escaped his lips. He was completely, hopelessly ruined. He had wanted her before, but now, seeing the fire in her soul, he knew he could never live without her. She wanted a fight? Fine. He would give her one. But he was a businessman, and he never lost a negotiation. He walked over to the desk, picked up his phone, and dialed his head of security. "Sir?" the guard answered quickly. "Increase the guard detail around the perimeter of the estate," Adrian commanded, his voice cold, calm, and completely in control once more. "Double the sensors on the main gates. No one goes in or out without my personal code. And monitor the security cameras in the hallways. If she even touches a door handle to the outside, I want to know about it instantly." "Yes, Mr. Ashford. And what about Mrs. Ashford's belongings?" "Bring them to her room," Adrian said, his eyes darkening as he looked toward the stairs. "But make sure there are no car keys, no phones, and no cash in her bags. She doesn't need them anymore." He hung up the phone and walked out of the study, his eyes fixed on the second floor. The game had officially changed, and he was going to make sure she learned exactly who held the rules.
