Chapter 6

The silence that followed the dull thud of her phone hitting the sofa was absolute. Aurora’s eyes remained wide, fixed on Adrian's face. The screen of her laptop was still glowing in the dimming light of the living room, displaying the digital transfer of her father's massive debt. She was free. Her father was free. The heavy, invisible chains Damian had used to bind her to this cold estate had been shattered in a single afternoon. But as Adrian stood over her, his hand still firmly cupping her jaw, she realized she had only traded one master for another. "You shouldn't have turned it off," Aurora whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Damian... if he can't reach me, he will call the house. He will know something is wrong." "Let him call," Adrian said flatly. His thumb swiped slowly across her cheekbone, a possessive, repetitive motion that made her skin tingle. "He is in Chicago. He cannot reach you. He cannot touch you. For the next three days, you do not exist to him. You only exist to me." "Adrian, you are talking like a madman," she said, though she didn't pull away from his hand. The truth was, she couldn't. His grip was a velvet vice—gentle enough not to hurt her, but firm enough to let her know that running was not an option. "I am still legally his wife. The press, the family... if anyone finds out about this, they will destroy you. Your companies, your reputation, everything you built." Adrian let out a low, dark laugh. It was a sound completely devoid of humor, filled instead with a cold, arrogant confidence. "Let them try," he murmured, leaning closer until his forehead almost touched hers. "I didn't build my empire to please the board of directors, Aurora. I built it so I would have the power to protect what is mine. And I have waited a year for you to be mine." "I am not a prize to be won in a business merger," she protested, her hands pressing against his chest, feeling the hard, rapid thrumming of his heart. "You aren't a prize," Adrian agreed, his voice dropping into a rough, gravelly whisper. "You are my entire life. Do you really not see it? Do you really think I gave you the cold shoulder because I found you annoying?" He took her hand, his fingers forcefully locking with hers, and pressed her palm directly against his chest, right over his heart. "I couldn't look at you, Aurora," he confessed, his dark eyes burning into hers with a raw, painful intensity. "Every time you smiled at me, every time you asked me if I had eaten, or if I was tired... it felt like a knife in my chest. You were trying to be a sweet, caring sister-in-law to a boy, while I was sitting there, fighting the urge to drag you out of this house and lock you away where Damian could never look at you again. I had to ignore you. If I didn't give you the cold shoulder, I would have lost my mind months ago." The honesty of his words hit her like a physical force. Aurora stared at him, her breath hitching. She had spent a year feeling lonely, feeling like an unwanted guest in her own home, completely blind to the fact that she was living with a predator who was constantly on the verge of breaking his own chains. "You... you should have told me," she breathed. "And what would you have done?" Adrian asked, a mocking, desperate smirk playing on his lips. "You were so determined to make your marriage work. You were so loyal to a man who didn't deserve a single drop of your devotion. If I had told you, you would have run away in fear. You would have looked at me like I was a monster." "I am looking at you like that right now," she whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "Good," Adrian growled, his gaze dropping to her lips. "Because I am a monster when it comes to you, Aurora. I have no mercy left. I have no patience left. I bought your father's freedom, and now I am going to take yours." He didn't wait for her to reply. He leaned down, his lips pressing firmly against hers. The kiss wasn't gentle. It was dominant, possessive, and filled with a raw, burning hunger that had been suppressed for too long. It was the kiss of a man who had finally claimed what he believed was his. Aurora gasped, intending to push him away, but the moment her lips parted, Adrian took full advantage, deepening the kiss, his hand moving from her jaw to the back of her neck to hold her in place. An electric, terrifying heat flooded through Aurora’s veins. She wanted to fight him. She wanted to tell herself that this was wrong, that he was younger, that this was betrayal. But her body refused to cooperate. For a year, she had been starved of touch, starved of passion, starved of anyone actually wanting her. Adrian didn't just want her—he was consumed by her. Her hands, which had been pushing against his chest, slowly clenched into the fabric of his shirt. She leaned into him, her heart matching his wild, erratic rhythm. Adrian let out a low, ragged groan against her mouth, his grip on her neck tightening as he pulled her flush against his hard body. The power dynamic in the room had completely shifted. He was no longer her junior brother. He was the man who held her entire world in his hands. When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily. Adrian’s eyes were dark, a fierce, triumphant light shining in them as he looked down at her flushed face and swollen lips. "You didn't push me away," Adrian whispered, his thumb tracing her lower lip, which was wet from his kiss. "This is crazy," Aurora murmured, her eyes glassy as she looked up at him. "Damian will find out. He will come back." "Let him come back," Adrian said, his voice cold and confident as he stepped back, though he kept his hand firmly locked with hers. "By the time he returns from Chicago, the divorce papers will be sitting on his desk. And you won't be in this house anymore." "Where will I be?" she asked, a sudden spike of nervous anticipation hitting her chest. Adrian smiled, a dark, handsome expression that made her stomach flip. He raised her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with a slow, deliberate pressure. "You will be at my estate, Aurora. Under my protection. Under my roof. Where you belong." Chapter 7 The drive to Adrian’s private estate was silent, but it was a silence thick with a heavy, restless tension. Aurora sat in the passenger seat of his sleek, black sedan, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She kept staring out the window as the familiar city lights faded, replaced by towering trees and winding, quiet roads. In the driver's seat, Adrian kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel while his other hand rested flat on her thigh. He didn't squeeze or pinch; his hand was just a heavy, warm weight, a constant reminder of his presence. A constant reminder that she wasn't going back. Every time she shifted slightly, his fingers would flex, silently telling her to stay still. He was driving fast, his sharp jaw set in a hard, focused line. "Adrian," she said softly, her voice breaking the quiet of the car. "What are we going to tell my father? He’s going to see the name of your firm on his company accounts. He’s going to ask questions." "I’ve already handled it," Adrian replied smoothly, not taking his eyes off the dark road ahead. "My assistant sent him an official email stating that Vanguard Capital has acquired his debt as a long-term investment. He believes it is a standard corporate restructuring. He doesn't know I did it for you, and he doesn't need to know." "You lied to him." "I protected him," Adrian corrected coldly. "And I protected us. Your father is an old man with a weak heart, Aurora. He doesn't need to know the details of how I took you from his creditor." The raw, unvarnished way he described it made a chill run down her spine. How I took you. He didn't say "how we fell in love" or "how we escaped." He spoke like a man who had successfully completed a hostile takeover of another man's property. Before she could argue, the car slowed down. They had reached a massive, heavy iron gate tucked away in the deep woods. Adrian pressed a button on his visor, and the gates groaned open. The estate was nothing like the Ashford family mansion. While Damian’s house was old, drafty, and filled with heavy antique furniture, Adrian’s home was a modern architectural masterpiece. It was built of dark stone, steel, and massive glass windows, sitting entirely isolated on a private hill. It looked incredibly secure—and incredibly lonely. Adrian parked the car in the underground garage. The moment the engine died, the silence rushed back in. Aurora went to open her door, but before her hand could even touch the handle, Adrian was already there. He opened her door, his towering frame blocking the light. Without a word, he reached down, took her hand, and pulled her out of the car. "Adrian, I can walk," she murmured as he began guiding her toward the private elevator. "I know you can," he said, his voice deep and rough. He didn't let go of her hand. His grip was tight, his fingers locked with hers so firmly that her knuckles slightly ached. "But I like holding you. Get used to it, Aurora." The elevator took them straight up to the main living area. The interior of his home was breathtakingly beautiful, with minimalist black leather furniture, polished concrete floors, and a sweeping view of the forest through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. It was spotless, but it felt like a museum. There were no personal photographs, no warm touches. "This is where you will live," Adrian said, releasing her hand only to place his palms on her shoulders, guiding her to face the massive glass view. "No one comes here without my permission. No press, no staff, no Damian. You are entirely safe here." Aurora looked at the reflection of them in the glass. Adrian was standing right behind her, his chest pressed against her back, his hands resting heavily on her shoulders. He looked so much bigger than her, completely enveloping her in his shadow. "And what am I supposed to do here all day?" she asked, a sudden wave of panic hitting her chest. "Am I just supposed to sit here and wait for you to come home from your office? Like I did with Damian?" Adrian’s grip on her shoulders tightened instantly. He spun her around so she was forced to look at him. His dark eyes were flashing with a sudden, intense anger. "Don't you ever compare me to him," Adrian hissed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet growl. He leaned down, his face inches from hers. "Damian left you alone because he didn't care. I am keeping you here because I care too much. I will not leave you alone, Aurora. I will be here every single night. I will work from this house if I have to. You will never have to wonder where I am, because I will be right here, watching you." The sheer, suffocating weight of his obsession made her breath catch. He wasn't joking. He truly wanted to build a world that consisted only of the two of them. "You can't keep me locked up, Adrian," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I have a life. I have friends. I have things I want to do." "You have me," Adrian said simply, as if that was the only answer she would ever need. He reached up, his fingers gently tracing her jawline, his touch softening but his eyes remaining fiercely possessive. "I will give you anything you want, Aurora. You want to paint? I will build you a studio. You want to travel? We will go on my private jet. But you will do it with me. Only with me." Aurora stared at him, her heart hammering wildly. She felt a dangerous, terrifying thrill running through her veins. It was insane, it was toxic, but after a year of being completely ignored, Adrian's suffocating attention felt like a drug. He wanted her so much it was destroying his common sense. "You're going to ruin us," she whispered, her hands slowly rising to rest against his chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thrumming of his heart. "I don't care," Adrian murmured. He leaned in, his lips brushing against her ear, his hot breath making her shiver. "Let the whole world burn, Aurora. As long as you are standing in the ashes with me." He pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locking onto hers, waiting for her reaction. He was giving her the cold shoulder no longer. The ice had melted, and the fire underneath was about to consume them both.
