The grand entrance hall went dead quiet.
Damian stood under the heavy archway of the estate, his dark coat soaked from the rain pouring outside. He looked like a shadow of the polished, arrogant heir Aurora remembered. His expensive designer suit was wrinkled, his silk tie loosened at the collar, and dark circles bruised the pale skin beneath his eyes.
When Adrian had stripped him of his corporate shares and threatened him with prison five years ago, Damian had lost everything—his reputation, his fortune, and his standing. But as his frantic gaze swept across the massive living room, it wasn't bitter jealousy in his eyes.
It was a strange, calculated urgency that made Aurora’s blood run cold.
Damian’s eyes skipped past the luxurious furniture, past the newly built child play area, and locked straight onto the double doors of the playroom where the twins had just entered with the nanny.
"You..." Damian breathed, his voice cracking with a sharp, breathless energy. He took a staggered step into the foyer, pointing a trembling hand toward the hallway. "They're here. The twins... you actually brought them back."
Aurora instinctively stepped in front of the playroom doors, her body going rigid. "Damian, stay away from them."
Adrian moved before anyone else could react. He crossed the polished floor in swift, silent strides, his tall, broad frame instantly blocking Damian's path. The subtle, desperate vulnerability he had shown Aurora seconds ago vanished completely, replaced by the lethal authority of a man protecting his territory.
"Take one more step, Damian," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made the air feel thin. "And I will have security throw you off this property."
"I don't care about your threats, Adrian!" Damian snapped, gesturing wildly with his hands. His face was slick with sweat, his breathing fast and shallow. "I didn't track your car here to fight over your money or your corporate shares! I need to know about the boys!"
"You don't need to know anything about my sons," Adrian hissed. His jaw clenched so hard a sharp muscle ticked in his cheek, his dark eyes fixed on his older brother with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You have five seconds to turn around and walk out those doors."
"Are they healthy?" Damian demanded, completely ignoring Adrian's warning. He tried to look past Adrian’s broad shoulders, his voice rising in panic. "Have they had standard blood panels done? Are their records clear? Have either of them ever had major surgeries?"
The questions echoed through the high-ceilinged room, bizarre and deeply disturbing.
Aurora stared at her ex-husband, her brows pulling together in profound confusion. She had expected Damian to accuse her. She had expected him to call her names, to mock Adrian, or to threaten legal action over the secret she had kept for five years.
She had not expected him to demand her children's medical history with the razor-sharp focus of a man hunting for a specific answer.
"Why are you asking that?" Aurora demanded, her voice cold as steel as she stepped beside Adrian. "Why do you care about their health, Damian?"
Damian’s eyes snapped to hers. For a fraction of a second, something vulnerable and utterly desperate flashed across his features, but it was instantly swallowed by a rigid, frantic resolve.
"Because I need to know," Damian whispered, his chest heaving. "It matters, Aurora. More than you can possibly comprehend right now."
"They are four years old!" she shouted back, anger surging through her chest. "They have nothing to do with you! They have nothing to do with your money, your family, or your endless, pathetic war with your brother!"
"They carry Ashford blood," Damian said, stepping to the side to try and get a better view of the hallway. "That makes them relevant whether you like it or not."
Before Damian could move another inch, Adrian’s hand shot out.
His long fingers gripped Damian’s collar with crushing force, shoving him back against the heavy oak entrance doors. The thud resonated through the entire house. Adrian leaned down until his face was inches from his brother's, his dark eyes burning with absolute, lethal intent.
"Touch them, look at them, or speak their names again," Adrian growled, his voice a flat whisper that carried no emotion—only an absolute promise. "And I will make sure you don't survive to see tomorrow morning."
Damian choked against the pressure on his throat, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he let out a harsh, desperate laugh, looking past Adrian at Aurora.
"You think you can just hide them away in your fortress, little brother?" Damian wheezed, his hollow eyes dark. "You think this is over? I'm not leaving the city without answers!"
"Get out," Adrian growled, releasing his grip and violently yanking the heavy door open, exposing the storm outside.
Damian stumbled backward onto the wet stone steps. He straightened his coat with trembling hands, giving Aurora one last, unreadable look before turning and hurrying down the driveway into the pouring rain.
Adrian slammed the door shut, locking it with a sharp, heavy click.
Silence collapsed over the grand foyer once more.
Aurora stood frozen near the center of the room, her breathing shallow. Damian hadn't acted like a jealous ex-husband. He hadn't acted like a defeated businessman trying to reclaim his pride.
He had acted like a man running out of time.
Adrian stood motionless by the door for a long moment, his chest rising and falling heavily. When he finally turned around, the lethal rage on his face softened into deep concern as his gaze landed on Aurora.
"He won't get near them again," Adrian said quietly, his voice raspy as he took a slow step toward her. "I'm doubling the perimeter security tonight."
Aurora looked at him, her hands still trembling slightly. "What does he want, Adrian? Why was he asking about their blood? Why was he looking for medical records?"
Adrian’s jaw tightened, his dark eyes shadowed with an unspoken tension. "It doesn't matter what he wants. He has no power here."
"It does matter!" Aurora insisted, stepping closer to him, her voice firm. "Damian doesn't care about children. He never wanted a family when we were married. For him to come here, desperate, asking about Leo and Liam's health... something is wrong, Adrian. And I am not going to sit in this house in the dark while you pretend everything is fine."
Adrian looked down at her, reading the absolute resolve in her eyes. The possessive edge in his posture remained, but beneath it, the shared instinct to protect their sons anchored them together in the quiet room.
"I'll have Marcus find out what Damian has been doing for the last six months," Adrian promised softly, reaching out to gently touch the edge of her sleeve. "Every meeting, every hospital visit, every dime he spent. You'll have your answers by tomorrow."
Aurora stared at his hand on her arm, feeling the steady, warm pulse of his touch. The storm outside battered against the heavy glass walls of the estate, but inside, a quiet, dangerous mystery had just taken root.
