76 Heart pounding, Adam jerked awake, opened his eyes and gasped. The Dead Hollow curve stretched ahead, the still-intact guardrail reflecting headlights in the dark. The past and present were overlaid, and Adam was crushed between them. He waited for the sound of brakes, of snapping limbs, breaking glass and ripping metal. One ear ached with the effort of listening, but the car’s engine and heater remained indistinct, white noise. Adam drew breath again when the car emerged from the curve on the other side.
