38 “Just wait a damn minute,” Harlan said. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. Teddy, when was this?” The man’s face went gray as his hair. Adam dragged a canvas chair over. Teddy sat down so heavily, the flimsy thing nearly toppled with him. “Hell, I don’t know. One year’s pretty much the same as another to me.” Harlan paced in front of the steps. “How old was the kid?” Teddy leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and massaged his temples. “Twelve, maybe. I think one of them remarked about him not being thirteen yet.” Adam went to the truck and retrieved his wallet from his duffel bag. Inside was a photograph, edges jagged where a child had trimmed them with scissors, and colors faded, giving the image a yellowish hue.
